SEAN ZIEMELIS SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR BRUTAL ATTACK IN LUTON
In a harrowing incident that shocked the community of Luton, Sean Ziemelis was convicted of a violent assault that involved attempting to murder a seven-month-old baby and injuring the baby’s mother.The events unfolded on the night of August 1, 2017, in a first-floor flat located in the town, leaving residents and witnesses deeply disturbed by the brutality of the attack.
According to court proceedings, Ziemelis, aged 31 and residing on Reginald Street in Luton, had been under the influence of cannabis the night before the assault.
The court heard that at approximately 2:00 AM, the mother of the infant discovered Ziemelis with his thumbs pressed into her baby’s eyes.
She immediately screamed for help, prompting Ziemelis to begin strangling the child in a violent attempt to cause harm.
During the attack, Ziemelis produced a knife, escalating the violence further.
The baby’s grandmother intervened, striking Ziemelis with a piece of wood in an effort to protect her family.
In response, Ziemelis violently threw the grandmother across the room.
The mother was also assaulted, punched repeatedly until she lost consciousness and was left with cuts, bruises, and a loose tooth after falling into nearby bins that neighbors had placed beneath the window to break her fall.
Witnesses and bystanders gathered outside the flat as chaos ensued.
The court was told that Ziemelis, in a disturbing display of violence, dangled the baby out of the window for several minutes.
A crowd had assembled, shouting and pleading for him to stop hurting the child.
Despite attempts by a man in the crowd to catch the baby, Ziemelis managed to throw the infant away from the crowd’s reach.
Miraculously, the baby sustained only superficial injuries, including redness around the eyes, swelling to the head, and cuts to the cheek and eyelid.
In a further act of violence, Ziemelis then threw the mother out of the window.
She fell onto the bins below, suffering cuts, bruises, and a loose tooth.
Members of the public quickly responded, pulling Ziemelis out of the window and physically restraining him, during which he was struck with fists and bottles.
The incident was described as a terrifying ordeal for everyone involved.
Medical assessments later revealed that Ziemelis’ use of cannabis significantly increased his risk of causing serious harm to others, according to psychiatrist Dr.
David Bond.
The court was told that Ziemelis admitted to charges of attempted murder, causing actual bodily harm, and common assault.
Judge Richard Foster, presiding over the case, sentenced Ziemelis to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years.
In his remarks, the judge emphasized the danger Ziemelis posed, stating, “Anyone who could do that to a child is dangerous.
The appropriate sentence is life imprisonment.
Any other sentence would not be adequate to reflect what happened.” Following his conviction, Ziemelis will undergo treatment under the Mental Health Act at Brockfield House before returning to prison to serve his sentence, marking a tragic chapter in Luton's recent history.
