MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND CONTROLLING/COERCIVE BEHAVIOUR
In a significant case that has drawn considerable attention in Cardiff, Sean Owen, a 29-year-old man from the Pontprennau area, has been sentenced to a five-year prison term following his conviction for serious criminal offenses involving sexual assault and controlling or coercive behavior. The proceedings took place at Cardiff Crown Court, where Owen was found guilty after a trial despite his initial denial of the charges.
The case centered around his long-term abuse of his former partner, Gabrielle Dale, who is 26 years old.
Over a span of seven years, Owen subjected Gabrielle to a pattern of verbal and physical abuse, which escalated to a sexual assault incident that ultimately led her to seek help from law enforcement.
Gabrielle Dale demonstrated remarkable courage by coming forward and contacting South Wales Police in June 2020.
She chose to waive her right to anonymity publicly, aiming to inspire others who might be suffering in silence to seek help and break free from abusive relationships.
Her decision underscores her strength and desire to prevent others from enduring similar pain.
During her victim personal statement, Gabrielle expressed her ongoing struggles but also her determination to move forward.
She stated, “Although I am still suffering and struggle daily, I refuse to live my life this way, I want to be able to walk away from this toxic situation in the hope that he never comes to hurt me again.
I’m a strong independent woman now.
I just want to be able to erase all the damage that’s been done.” Owen’s sentencing was handed down on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Cardiff Crown Court.
In addition to his imprisonment, he was also subjected to a restraining order designed to prevent any contact with Gabrielle or further harassment.
Following the conclusion of the case, Gabrielle expressed her gratitude towards the police officer who handled her case, describing the support she received as “amazing.” She added, “You’ve helped me in so many ways and reassured me whenever I had doubts.
I’ll forever be grateful for all your help.” This case highlights the importance of speaking out against abuse and the justice system’s role in protecting victims in Cardiff and beyond.
