MAN WHO ADMITTED DOMESTIC ABUSE IN WEST KILBRIDE IS SPARED JAIL

A man named Scott McAlinn, aged 35, has admitted to engaging in a series of domestic abuse behaviors towards his former partner at their home in West Kilbride between June 2021 and June 2022.

During court proceedings, he confessed to shouting, swearing, acting aggressively, and monitoring his partner's movements using a Ring doorbell device.

He also pleaded guilty to uttering threats of violence and making derogatory remarks on June 30, 2021, as well as damaging the property by slamming doors on February 15, 2022.

Further allegations include repeatedly sending threatening text messages after being asked to stop, attempting to control his partner's movements, threatening her, sounding his car horn excessively, pulling wires from the walls, and behaving aggressively.

He was due to be sentenced at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last month, but the case was postponed pending assessment for the Caledonian project, a program aimed at changing the behavior of domestic abusers.

McAlinn's solicitor stated that his client had pleaded guilty midway through a trial to reduced charges.

In his sentencing on August 5, the court found that McAlinn was suitable for the Caledonian project.

The solicitor requested a non-custodial sentence due to McAlinn's employment as an electrical superintendent working offshore and the need to support his family.

Sheriff Mundell acknowledged the severity of the domestic abuse but considered McAlinn a first-time offender and sentenced him to 200 hours of unpaid work, supervision for two years, and participation in the Caledonian program for two years.

A three-year non-harassment order was also issued prohibiting McAlinn from contacting the victim.
