SCOTT BUIK'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY IN ROCHDALE REVEALED

In a deeply disturbing case of animal neglect and cruelty, Scott Andrew Buik, a resident of Mellor Street in Rochdale, has been found guilty of multiple offences related to the mistreatment and starvation of pets. The case, which has shocked the local community and animal welfare advocates alike, highlights the severe consequences of neglect and the importance of vigilant animal protection efforts.

Buik, born on September 30, 1991, was convicted in 2019 after an investigation by the RSPCA uncovered the tragic fate of two dogs and a cat under his care. The investigation was initiated following a distressing incident on November 12, 2018, when Buik brought an emaciated Staffordshire bull terrier named Buster to a veterinary clinic. The dog was in a critical state, weighing only 11 kilograms—approximately half the weight expected for a healthy dog of his breed. The veterinarian, upon examination, observed that Buster was gravely ill, unable to lift his head, and suffering from severe malnutrition. Recognizing the dog's suffering, the vet made the humane decision to euthanize Buster to end his pain.

Concerned that Buster’s condition was a result of neglect, the veterinarian contacted the RSPCA, prompting inspectors Natalie Taylor and Nina Small to visit Buik’s residence later that day. During the inspection, they discovered the heartbreaking remains of another dog, Scarlett, who had already succumbed to starvation. Buik led the inspectors into his home, where they found a cage in the kitchen housing Buster. Nearby, a second cage was covered with a pink blanket, which, upon inspection, was found to be crawling with fleas. When the blanket was removed, the inspectors uncovered the emaciated body of Scarlett, a crossbreed dog, whose ribs, spine, shoulders, and hips were painfully prominent. It was believed that Scarlett had died just the day before the inspection.

Further disturbing findings included the discovery of a tortoiseshell female cat named Tilly in the cellar of Buik’s house. Tilly’s body showed signs of decomposition, with mold growing on her face, indicating she had been dead for some time. Buik claimed that he was caring for Scarlett and Tilly on behalf of friends, but evidence suggested that these animals had been left to starve under his care. The cruelty extended beyond neglect; Buik had posted a disturbing photo of Buster covered in blood on Facebook, expressing grief over the dog’s death, which added a chilling dimension to the case.

Inspector Nina Small, with 16 years of experience at the RSPCA, described the case as one of the most horrific she had encountered. She remarked, “It was awful to see the condition of these animals; they must have suffered a long and lingering death because they were denied food. They were clearly kept in atrocious conditions where they were locked away and really just left to rot. The post-mortem reports revealed pieces of plastic and metal in the dogs’ bodies, indicating they had been so hungry they attempted to eat anything they could find. Withholding food when it was available and leaving these animals to suffer until they died is the most callous thing imaginable.”

As a result of his actions, Buik was sentenced to a 26-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was given a community order that included a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 150 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay costs amounting to £1,280 and a victim surcharge of £115. Importantly, Buik was banned from keeping animals for life, a measure aimed at preventing further cruelty. This case has served as a stark reminder of the cruelty that can occur behind closed doors and the vital role of animal welfare organizations in protecting vulnerable creatures in Rochdale and beyond.
