WOMAN PHONES POLICE AND CONFESSES TO SEXUALLY ABUSING TEENAGE GIRLS

A woman haunted by feelings of shame and remorse took the drastic step of calling the police to confess to a series of serious sexual offenses committed decades earlier.

Sarah Bennett, now aged 50 and residing in Cardiff, revealed that she had sexually abused two young girls during her twenties.

Her confession came after she had reformed her lifestyle, giving up alcohol and turning towards religion, which prompted her to confront her past.

The authorities learned from Bennett’s admission that the abuse involved a victim who was only 12 years old at the time.

According to her confession, Bennett had initially groomed the young girl by providing her with cider and money.

Over time, the victim developed a crush on her, and Bennett, in turn, expressed feelings for her, creating a manipulative and abusive dynamic.

Police contacted the victim, who agreed to press charges, although the second girl involved in the incidents chose not to pursue legal action.

During a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on that Friday, detailed accounts of the abuse were presented.

Prosecutor Ruth Smith outlined that the sexual misconduct began when the victim was just a child of twelve.

Bennett’s grooming tactics included giving the girl alcohol and financial gifts to gain her trust.

The victim, recalling her feelings, described herself as “needy for affection,” and testified that Bennett would often kiss her on the hand, her mouth, and would frequently “cwtsh,” a term for cuddling, which was part of Bennett’s attempt to bond with her.

As the grooming continued, the abusive acts escalated.

Bennett was observed to have removed the victim’s shorts and engaged in sexual acts, with the victim stating she was “not really sure what she was doing” at the time.

Bennett’s warnings to keep the abuse a secret left the young girl feeling conflicted; she was told that if she disclosed the abuse, she wouldn’t be able to see Bennett anymore.

Although she didn’t derive any pleasure from the acts, the victim admitted to feeling “sad” about the thought of losing contact with her abuser.

Further allegations revealed that Bennett had touched the victim’s breasts and pulled down her tights to engage in sexual touching of her private parts.

The victim, describing her feelings during these incidents, said she felt “stupid” and experienced actions that were “forceful and painful.” On one such occasion, the abuse caused her to bleed, and soon after, she had her first period.

The pattern of abuse reportedly continued whenever Bennett saw an opportunity, with the victim recalling Bennett’s rough treatment and offering alcohol regularly.

The victim recounted that Bennett was verbally abusive, calling her a “slag,” which contributed to her feelings of isolation and despair.

She expressed that she “just wanted to die” and found herself struggling with mental health issues, including self-harm by cutting herself with a broken mirror.

The emotional toll was severe, and she described her stomach “knott[ing] up” whenever Bennett shouted at her.

A particularly disturbing incident occurred while the victim and Bennett were watching a film.

Bennett became sexually aroused by a rape scene and then violently threw the girl onto the ground, subsequently abusing her.

These acts of sexual violence persisted over several years, with the victim describing her constant fear and fright, especially when Bennett was under the influence of alcohol.

Her fear was compounded when Bennett would physically assault her such as grabbing her by the throat or destroying her belongings whenever she tried to establish boundaries or make her own choices.

As the victim grew older and began to forge new friendships, Bennett’s controlling behaviour intensified.

She noted that Bennett’s manipulation kept her away from her family and eroded her confidence and self-esteem.

She also revealed that her experiences led to ongoing anxiety and emotional struggles, which continue to affect her today.

The turning point in the case occurred in 2021 when Bennett voluntarily contacted police authorities, confessing her involvement with two girls, including her original victim.

She explained that she had been “terrible” and felt compelled to tell the truth, describing her state of mind as “riddled with guilt.” She also expressed her regret and remorse for her actions.

When law enforcement officers arrived at her residence in Pen y Bryn Way, Gabalfa, they found her had left a handwritten note that read: “Dear Sir/Madam, I confess when I was in my 20s I had a relationship with two teenage girls.....

I have hated myself with a passion for year.

It seems like a different person or lifetime.

The shame and guilt remains within.

I am truly sorry.” Bennett eventually pleaded guilty to 14 counts of indecent assault of a child.

The court acknowledged her previous good character and noted that her remorse and the circumstances surrounding her case should be considered.

During the mitigation, solicitor Adam Sharp stated that Bennett’s disclosure to the police was pivotal, revealing that her guilt had been “riddled” many years earlier.

He added that her background was rooted in a “traditional and religious family,” but she had experienced trauma in her childhood and left her family home before pursuing work as an auxiliary nurse and a delivery driver.

It was also noted that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and had maintained eight years of sobriety.

Upon delivering the sentence, Judge Lucy Crowther recognised Bennett’s struggles and her efforts to turn her life around.

She acknowledged that Bennett had overcome significant health challenges, addiction, and personal trauma.

The judge commended her for having the courage to come forward and confide in the authorities about crimes she had committed long ago.

Nevertheless, she sentenced her to a total of three years in prison.

Furthermore, Bennett was ordered to comply with sex offender notification requirements, was issued an indefinite restraining order, and was subjected to a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order to safeguard the public from any future risks.
