SARA HOLLAND'S HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN HYDE: RABBIT LEFT TO STARVE TO DEATH

In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Sara Holland, aged 27, of 33 Garden Street in Hyde, Tameside, Greater Manchester, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a defenseless pet rabbit. The tragic incident unfolded in February 2022 when the RSPCA responded to concerns raised about the welfare of a rabbit kept at her residence.

Upon arrival at Holland's property, inspectors discovered the lifeless body of a young female Lionhead rabbit named Bing inside a hutch that was in a deplorable state. The hutch, described as large and pale blue, was situated against the rear wall of the garden, approximately a meter from the back door leading into the kitchen. The conditions inside the enclosure were appalling, with no food or water available for the animal.

Inspector Beth Fazackerley recounted her visit, stating that she was shown into the backyard by Holland herself. She observed that the top level of the hutch was almost empty, save for some feces and an overturned log tunnel. Attached to the mesh door was a roller-ball water bottle, which was completely dry. The bottom section of the hutch contained an empty, dry green bowl and a human food tray, both devoid of any nourishment. The floor was covered with multiple fecal droppings, covering roughly a third of the wooden surface. On the right side of the hutch, the inspector noted a rabbit lying on its side atop the feces.

Holland explained to the inspector that she had discovered Bing dead the previous evening. She expressed her belief that the rabbit had suffered a heart attack, attributing her concern to a recent scare caused by one of her dogs. Despite her assumption, she permitted the RSPCA to take Bing to a veterinarian for examination.

The vet assessed the rabbit's condition, assigning a body score of just one out of five, indicating severe emaciation. No signs of bruising, swelling, or mouth abnormalities were observed that could explain eating difficulties. The veterinarian concluded that the rabbit had suffered due to prolonged malnutrition, which would have caused weakness, hunger, and debilitation over several days. The post-mortem revealed that Bing had experienced severe and chronic muscle loss, with fur around her feet soiled and skin thickening on her hocks—clear indicators of unhygienic living conditions. The examination also found no digestible material in her stomach, and no other pathological causes for her weight loss, confirming that prolonged starvation was the most probable cause of death.

Holland was subsequently prosecuted and found guilty in her absence of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and neglecting her duty to meet the animal’s basic needs according to good practice. The court acknowledged her mental health issues and past relationship problems as part of her background. As part of her sentence, she received a 12-month community order with 25 days of rehabilitation activities, a fine of £120, and a ten-year ban on keeping any animals. This case highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the severe consequences of neglecting animal welfare in Hyde and the wider Tameside area.
