SAMIM SOFATI FROM NEWCASTLE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRL AND DISTRIBUTION OF INDECENT IMAGES
In June 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Samim Sofati, a man from Newcastle, who was convicted of serious sexual offenses against a young girl and the distribution of explicit images. The incident came to light after Sofati's attempt to manipulate his former partner by sharing inappropriate photographs of a teenage girl in bed, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
According to court proceedings, Sofati, aged 22 at the time, had gone to a friend’s house with the explicit intention of engaging in sexual activity with a vulnerable 14-year-old girl.
The court was informed that after the act, Sofati took two photographs of the girl while she was in bed, one of which showed her breasts exposed.
He then sent these images to his ex-girlfriend, aiming to provoke jealousy and emotional reaction.
This act of sending explicit images was part of his attempt to manipulate his former partner, but it backfired when she recognized the girl’s young appearance and reported the matter to the police.
Following the report, law enforcement officials swiftly arrested Sofati.
He faced charges of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, as well as distributing an indecent photograph of a child.
Despite denying the allegations, Sofati was found guilty after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court.
The court sentenced him to five years in prison for his crimes.
During the sentencing, Judge Amanda Rippon emphasized the emotional impact on the victim, noting that there was no victim statement because the girl wished to move past the incident.
The judge described her as being embarrassed, humiliated, and distressed, and acknowledged that she was now trying to cope with her GCSE examinations amidst the trauma.
The court was also informed that a support worker for Sofati’s ex-girlfriend had contacted police on September 30, 2015, after Sofati sent the explicit images.
The photographs depicted Sofati and the girl apparently naked in bed together.
Prosecutors revealed that the ex-girlfriend accused Sofati of having slept with the girl, to which he responded in a dismissive and inappropriate manner, claiming he could “s**g who he wanted.” Further details revealed that Sofati had visited the house of a mutual friend, knowing the girl was there, with the clear intention of having sex with her.
When he arrived, the girl was lying on a bed due to a headache, and Sofati lay down with her, leading to their sexual encounter.
During the trial, it was established that Sofati took photographs during this encounter and sent them to his ex-girlfriend to incite jealousy, a reckless and criminal act that contributed to his downfall.
As part of his sentence, Sofati was also subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of minors from future harm.
