A woman responsible for a violent and relentless campaign of domestic violence that nearly resulted in a man's death has received a 12-year prison sentence.

Samantha Smith, aged 56, pleaded guilty to attempting to murder 59-year-old David Harrison during a brutal assault at Rothesay Mead in Hereford on July 3.

During the attack, she caused serious stab wounds to her victim, who police commended for his resilience and cooperation in assisting their investigation.

Smith, who resides on Waterfield Road in Hereford, appeared before Worcester Crown Court for sentencing.

Detective Constable Emma O'Hare, who led the case, stated: "This violent assault could easily have resulted in a murder conviction." She added, "Thankfully, the victim was strong enough to collaborate with us, and I am pleased to report he is making significant physical progress in his recovery." O'Hare emphasized that domestic abuse affects both men and women, noting that many male victims endure controlling, violent, and coercive relationships yet often remain silent.
