SAMANTHA ORD'S CRUEL NEGLECT IN ASHINGTON: DOGS SUFFER FOR WEEKS

In a distressing case that unfolded in Ashington, Samantha J Ord, born around 1983 and residing on Pont Street, was found guilty of neglecting her three dogs, leading to their suffering from severe skin conditions and poor overall health. The incident came to light in 2018 when RSPCA officers visited her home and discovered the animals in a dire state.

According to court reports, the three dogs—a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a Labrador/Staffordshire cross, and an American Bulldog—were suffering from significant health issues. The RSPCA prosecutor, Stewart Haywood, detailed that the animals had been neglected over a period of many weeks, resulting in painful skin disorders and deteriorating body conditions. The dogs were immediately taken to a veterinarian for examination, revealing alarming conditions. One of the dogs had crusty skin, hair loss, and an unpleasant yeasty smell emanating from her coat. Another was found to be in a poor state of health, with fleas visibly present on her fur. The third dog exhibited similar health problems, indicating a pattern of neglect.

Mr. Haywood emphasized that all three animals were suffering, and their condition was a direct consequence of prolonged neglect. Fortunately, after being rescued, the dogs were placed in the care of the RSPCA, where they received necessary treatment and care. The veterinary team reported that the animals are now making good progress and are on the path to recovery.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Ord, who was described as being of previously good character, was experiencing personal difficulties at the time. She was suffering from depression, and her mental health struggles were compounded by the loss of her husband in 2017. These hardships appeared to have impacted her ability to care for her pets properly. A probation officer testified that she had no prior convictions and was considered to be at a low risk of re-offending.

Her defense lawyer, Alan Brown, expressed remorse on her behalf, stating that Ord felt a deep sense of shame and regret for her failure to properly care for her dogs. The court ultimately sentenced her to a four-month curfew and an 18-month community order that included rehabilitation activities. Additionally, she was ordered to pay £485 in costs and charges. As part of her punishment, she was disqualified from owning or keeping animals for five years, with the ban set to expire in July 2024.
