SAM EVANS AND THE HORRIFIC SEX ATTACK IN PLYMOUTH
A serving Army commando from Plymouth has been sentenced to prison after committing a brutal and unprovoked sexual assault that caused lasting trauma to his victim. The incident, which took place in July of the previous year, shocked the local community and highlighted the severity of the violence that can occur even among those who are otherwise regarded as disciplined military personnel.
Cpl Sam Evans, aged 29 and a member of the Royal Artillery Regiment based in Plymouth, was found guilty of multiple charges including rape, two counts of sexual assault by penetration, non-fatal strangulation, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
His conviction followed a prior court hearing where the evidence proved his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
In response to his actions, Judge Robert Linford delivered a stern sentence, imposing a total of 18 years in prison for what he termed an "explosion of sexual violence." Furthermore, Evans was subjected to a restraining order lasting 25 years, effectively prohibiting any form of contact or communication with his victim.
The court proceedings revealed that the two individuals had initially made acquaintance several months earlier through the popular dating app Tinder.
Despite their virtual connection, they had only arranged to meet in person on that fateful night in July.
They crossed paths quite unexpectedly in Plymouth, leading the woman to accompany Evans to his flat on Ker Street.
The victim, who has been granted lifelong anonymity to protect her identity, described a harrowing ordeal that lasted for hours, during which Evans subjected her to relentless violence.
She recounted that he forcibly knelt on her chest, pinning her down, and subjected her to slaps and punches to her head.
She was spat in her eyes and face, and even urinated in her mouth and face.
Despite her pleas and protests, Evans paid no heed to her protests to stop.
According to her testimony, he also attempted to silence her screams by smothering her with a pillow.
Throughout this terrifying episode, she repeatedly told him she did not want to have sex, emphasizing her fear and desperation.
In her words, she believed she was dying during the ordeal, which she described as both violent and unrelenting.
Her statement was clear in expressing the profound impact of the attack: "Sam Evans has caused irreparable damage to me." In contrast, Evans attempted to justify his actions, claiming they were "playful and softly done," a notion that the court dismissed as entirely inadequate and dismissive of the severity of his conduct.
Judge Linford addressed Evans directly, condemning his actions as entirely unjustifiable, especially given the context that both parties had been intoxicated at the time.
While he acknowledged that alcohol can impair judgment, the judge emphasized that it was no excuse for such violent behavior, and in fact, it made the situation worse.
The judge also highlighted that in sober moments, Evans was known to be a hardworking, kind, and considerate man.
However, the incident in question represented a catastrophic departure from his usual character—an "explosion of sexual violence".
The police in Devon and Cornwall praised the courage demonstrated by the victim in coming forward and providing crucial evidence that led to Evans's conviction.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of perseverance and bravery among victims of sexual violence, and the justice system's commitment to holding offenders accountable, regardless of their background or social status.
