SADIQ CHOUDHRY FROM SWADLINCOTE CONVICTED OF SEX OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGE GIRL

In February 2011, a serious criminal case unfolded involving Sadiq Choudhry, a local figure from Swadlincote, who was found guilty of committing sexual offences against a 15-year-old girl. The incident drew significant attention due to Choudhry's prominent role in the community and his position as the owner of a taxi firm.

Choudhry, who also served as a councillor and operated 24 7 Private Hire in Swadlincote, was convicted by a jury on four counts related to sexual activity with a minor. The court proceedings revealed the disturbing nature of his misconduct, which involved inappropriate physical contact with the teenage girl. Following the conviction, the court imposed a series of penalties aimed at safeguarding the public and preventing future offences.

At Derby Crown Court, Judge Hilary Watson delivered the sentence, which included a three-year community order and a ban on Choudhry working with children. The judge explicitly stated that Choudhry, aged 45, would be prohibited from transporting schoolchildren or young people in his taxi, emphasizing the seriousness of the offence and the need to protect vulnerable individuals.

Judge Watson described Choudhry’s actions as “reprehensible” and criticized his predatory behavior. She remarked, “I find your behaviour to be persistent. You ignored clear verbal warnings from her about your intentions but you persisted. Your sexual gratification was uppermost in your mind when you preyed on her vulnerability. You touched her body in a way that was wholly inappropriate.”

The judge also highlighted the emotional toll on the victim, noting that she had to recount the incident under cross-examination, despite Choudhry’s denial of the offences. “Because of your denial of the offences, she had to go through the account of what happened. She had to answer questions from your barrister, who called her a liar,” she explained.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Watson explained her decision to impose a community order rather than immediate imprisonment. She stated that a custodial sentence would not have allowed sufficient time for Choudhry to undergo appropriate rehabilitation programs. As part of the order, he was instructed to attend a sex offenders’ group program and pay £1,240 towards court costs.

Furthermore, Choudhry was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register and adhere to a sexual offences prevention order for five years. The restrictions include not entering within 50 metres of any educational establishment unless passing through for work or dropping off or collecting his own children. He is also prohibited from associating with or seeking the company of any child under 16, except for relatives.

During the hearing, Graham Blower, representing Choudhry, presented the court with newspaper cuttings and references that depicted him as a respected community member. Blower described Choudhry as “a pillar of the community,” noting his involvement as a parish councillor and his efforts in organizing a large fundraising campaign to aid victims of the 2009 Pakistan earthquake.

Judge Watson acknowledged these references but pointed out that they revealed “another side” of Choudhry. She remarked, “They show a pillar of the local community and one who would put himself out for people. And it would appear that it is just this area in which you need considerable help.” The case underscored the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and highlighted the complex nature of individuals who may hold respected positions in society but commit serious offences.
