RYAN SMITH AND SHOCKING SEXUAL GROOMING IN HULL
A man named Ryan Smith, previously residing in Hull, has been convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl, in a case that has shocked the local community. The court heard how Smith, 30 years old, engaged in a manipulative and predatory campaign to groom a schoolgirl, promising her an idyllic future filled with material possessions and romantic adventures.
According to court proceedings, Smith initially contacted the girl through electronic communication, where he lavished her with compliments, calling her "hot," "fit," and "perfect." He spoke of grand plans they would share, including living together in a luxurious house and owning matching cars.
He also described their future dates as "incredible," creating a false sense of intimacy and trust.
The investigation into Smith’s actions was triggered when it was discovered that the girl had been kissing him and had arranged to meet him in person.
Authorities found that the two had exchanged numerous sexual messages, including intimate photographs.
The girl revealed that they had shared kisses and cuddles, and that they had sent each other explicit images.
During police interviews, Smith refused to comment, but investigators uncovered a substantial amount of messaging evidence that detailed their sexual grooming.
Particularly disturbing was Smith’s encouragement for the girl to send him explicit pictures of herself.
He also sent her a photograph with the words "I love you" written on an intimate part of his body, further manipulating her emotionally.
The girl recounted that Smith had promised her "the world" and claimed he was planning "amazing things" for their future together.
She also confided that she was instructed not to tell anyone about their interactions, which added to her distress.
The impact on the girl’s life was profound.
She described her schoolwork as being severely affected, stating that her life had become "pure hell" and that her circumstances had become "unbearable" due to the ordeal.
During mitigation, lawyer David Godfrey explained that most of the contact between Smith and the girl was through electronic means.
He noted that Smith had since moved to Wales and emphasized that he had no previous criminal convictions.
Mr.
Godfrey acknowledged the shame Smith felt and described his client as someone who had taken responsibility for his actions, stating, "It has been a difficult and shameful thing for him to acknowledge.
He is the author of his own misfortune." He also mentioned that Smith was now employed full-time and had not subjected the girl to a trial, implying remorse and a desire to move forward.
However, the judge, Sir John Thackray KC, was unequivocal in his condemnation.
He stated, "You groomed your young victim.
She was no doubt impressionable and no doubt flattered by the messages and communications that you gave her.
You are 100 per cent to blame for this offending.
Your victim was a young girl who bears no responsibility whatsoever for what took place." The judge highlighted the lasting damage caused by Smith’s actions, warning that the girl might never fully recover and could struggle with trust issues for the rest of her life.
As a result, Smith was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he was handed a five-year sexual harm prevention order and an indefinite restraining order.
He is also required to register as a sex offender for life, underscoring the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
