RYAN MITCHELL FROM BALINDALLACH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING UNDERAGE GIRLS IN SPEYSIDE
In February 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Ryan Mitchell, a 22-year-old farm worker from Ballindalloch, who was convicted of engaging in sexual activities with underage girls in the Speyside area. The incidents, which took place in various secluded locations, have shocked the local community and highlighted serious concerns about the safety of minors in rural regions.Mitchell had established contact with two teenage girls through social media platforms, fully aware that both victims were only 14 years old. His interactions with the girls involved persistent chatting, which eventually led to him offering to pick them up in his tractor. Once in his vehicle, he drove them to isolated spots where he engaged in sexual acts with each of them. These actions were carried out despite the clear age difference and the obvious vulnerability of the victims.
The first girl was taken to a small farmstead, where the incident occurred. Her mother became suspicious after noticing her daughter's unusual behavior and subsequently raised concerns with authorities. The police investigation revealed that Mitchell had been in contact with her prior to the incident, and the situation was deemed serious enough to warrant legal action.
In a separate but similarly troubling incident within the same month, Mitchell drove a second teenage girl to a field. During this encounter, he explicitly asked her for sex. Although she initially refused, she later consented, and the act took place inside the cab of his tractor. Following the incident, the girl took the initiative to contact law enforcement herself, demonstrating her awareness of the inappropriate nature of the encounter and her courage in reporting it.
Mitchell, who resides at Marypark, Ballindalloch, admitted to having sexual relations with both underage girls during the court proceedings. His admission was a significant factor in the sentencing process. At the hearing, his defense solicitor, Stephen Carty, acknowledged Mitchell’s “emotional immaturity” and the challenges he faces, which he argued contributed to his behavior. Carty emphasized that Mitchell recognized his conduct was wrong and expressed remorse for his actions.
He further explained that Mitchell has a number of personal difficulties, as outlined in a psychiatric report, which contribute to his immaturity and slow development relative to his age. Carty described Mitchell as a young man facing significant challenges and admitted that his client’s actions were foolish and irresponsible, stemming from poor judgment.
Despite these mitigating factors, the court was clear that the severity of the crimes could not be overlooked. Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov acknowledged Mitchell’s personal issues but emphasized the gravity of his offenses. She stated, “You are a first offender and suffer from particular issues but that has to be balanced with the gravity of these offences.”
As a result, Mitchell was sentenced to 12 months in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed to minors and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable young people from exploitation and abuse in rural communities like Ballindalloch and the wider Speyside region.
