RYAN LANGLEY AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN HULL
A former Liberal Democrat politician has been sentenced to prison after engaging in disturbing sexual activities with an underage boy and creating indecent images of children.Ryan Langley, aged 34 and residing on Hessle Road in Hull, pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges, including causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a teenage boy between January 2019 and April 2021.
He also admitted to distributing indecent images of children and committing three separate offences related to making such images.
Hull Crown Court heard that Langley's actions revealed a disturbing lack of remorse, as he appeared to 'rejoice' upon discovering the boy's true age.
Instead of feeling shocked or appalled, Langley continued his illicit conduct, which was described as 'a very much a fall from grace' for someone who had previously served as a local councillor with aspirations of securing a prominent role at Westminster.
The court was told that his political career and reputation had been severely compromised by his actions.
Prosecutor Dale Brook explained that the teenage boy's parents discovered sexual messages on his mobile phone, leading the boy to admit that he had met some adult men for sexual encounters, including Langley.
During the investigation, Langley claimed he believed the boy was 18, but it was later confirmed that the boy was only 14 years old.
When the boy revealed his actual age, Langley reportedly responded by saying he was 'the youngest' he had ever 'had' and continued to exchange messages.
The communication between Langley and the boy involved the sharing of explicit photos and videos, with Langley discussing the possibility of engaging in more sexual contact before the boy turned 16.
Police seized Langley's phone and laptops, which contained WhatsApp messages revealing highly sexualized conversations with males over 18, during which Langley acknowledged having had sex with the boy, mistakenly believing he was 16.
Further evidence included images of the boy and boasts about wanting more sexual contact with him.
Investigators also uncovered numerous indecent images of children on Langley's devices, including 62 images classified as Category A, 44 as Category B, and 75 as Category C.
These findings underscored the severity of his offending.
According to reports from Hull Live, Langley distributed several photographs and videos depicting his sexual contact with other boys under the age of 16, including one aged 15.
During mitigation, lawyer Ayman Khokhar emphasized that Langley had no prior convictions but acknowledged that his actions had betrayed the trust of others.
Khokhar described Langley as a talented local councillor who had dedicated years to serving his community and had aspirations of moving into national politics.
He stated, 'He will be living with the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life.' Khokhar also noted that Langley had been paid very little as a councillor and had entered politics out of a desire to help others.
He further explained that Langley's career was now effectively over, stating, 'He has lost what looked like a promising career.
He has served his local community for a number of years.
Despite mental health difficulties, he threw himself into local politics and had aspirations eventually to go to Westminster.' Khokhar concluded that Langley was aware that his future in frontline politics was impossible and that he had let himself and those close to him down.
Judge John Thackray KC addressed the court, stating that Langley initially believed he was engaging in sexual activity with a minor above the age of 16.
However, once he learned the boy was only 14, his reaction was disturbingly different.
The judge remarked, 'Rather than being shocked and appalled, you seemed to rejoice in the activity that had taken place and you demonstrated corrupt behaviour and a level of depravity by exchanging sexual images of the child and discussing future sexual activity.' The judge condemned Langley's possession and distribution of indecent images of children, describing his conduct as a significant fall from grace.
As a result, Langley was sentenced to three years in prison and was issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender for life.
Following his conviction, Langley resigned from his councillor position at the local elections held in May, marking the end of his political career.
