MAN KILLED GRANDAD IN 'VIOLENT UNPROVOKED ATTACK'
A court has heard that Ryan Cullen, a 34-year-old who was homeless, carried out a violent and unprovoked assault resulting in the death of his grandfather.The incident took place in Liverpool city centre in February 2024 According to Liverpool Crown Court, police responded to a domestic assault call and discovered Mr.
Cullen’s grandfather, Brian Cullen, age 73, severely injured.
Despite being rushed to hospital, Mr.
Cullen succumbed to his injuries and died later that day.
Ryan Cullen, who has no fixed address, admitted to the charge of manslaughter.
He was sentenced to a five-year hybrid order, which involves treatment in a psychiatric hospital until he is considered mentally fit for imprisonment.
Describing the case, Merseyside Police mentioned that Mr.
Cullen was deemed vulnerable at the time of the attack.
The assault took place at around 17:40 GMT on 10 February on Midghall Street, and the police described it as a “violent and unprovoked attack” by his grandson.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy McCourt expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a “tragic case” that has profoundly affected the family.
He added that while Cullen has received justice, such outcomes do not offer much solace or aid in healing.
McCourt highlighted the various forms domestic abuse can take and emphasized the availability of support services for those in need.
He assured that specially trained officers are committed to offering assistance with sensitivity and understanding.
He also encouraged the community to remain vigilant and look out for signs of distress among family members, friends, or neighbours.
