DEWSBURY MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC STRANGULATION AND ASSAULT
Ryan Brook, 35 years old, was implicated in a series of domestic violence episodes. He attacked his former partner—whom he had known for half a year—in her home, twice choking her during the assault.
The woman lost consciousness at one point, and Brook continued his aggression by damaging items around her living space.
Court documentation revealed that he strangled her to the extent that she feared a heart attack, and in her victim impact statement, she detailed experiences of stress, weight loss, and reliance on prescribed medication after the attack.
This was the third time within a 12-month period that Brook had assaulted a partner, following previous assaults in October 2022 and January 2023.
Despite having a community order in place, Brook re-entered the woman's flat on August 12, breaching a domestic violence protection order.
During this visit, he slapped her four times, leaving bruises, and attempted to strangle her once more, even stating he would kill her.
She managed to kick him away as he tried to choke her again.
The incident concluded when Brook took sleeping pills and retired to bed.
The court proceedings revealed that he admitted to criminal damage but was found guilty of deliberate strangulation and assault by beating.
He expressed remorse, explaining that alcohol had played a role in aggravating their tumultuous relationship.
Brook mentioned he had maintained sobriety for nine weeks and intended to seek treatment for his alcohol and drug misuse after his release.
He was sentenced to a three-year prison term, and a restraining order for ten years was imposed to prevent contact with the victim.
