RYAN BRENNAN FROM RUABON SENTENCED FOR BADGER SET INTERFERENCE IN WREXHAM AND SHROPSHIRE

In a recent case that has drawn significant attention from wildlife conservation authorities, Ryan Brennan, a resident of Kennel Cottage, Pen Y Lan, Ruabon, Wrexham LL14 6HD, was found guilty of interfering with a protected badger sett. The incident took place in January 2024 and involved Brennan, who is known to be employed as a terrierman with the Wynnstay Hunt, an organization notorious for its controversial fox hunting practices across the counties of Flintshire, Shropshire, and Cheshire.

According to reports, Brennan deliberately tampered with the badger sett by filling it in, a method often employed by 'trail' hunts to prevent foxes from seeking refuge underground. Such actions are considered highly detrimental to wildlife, as they can cause unnecessary suffering and harm to the animals involved. The practice is widely condemned by conservationists and legal authorities alike, as it directly interferes with protected species and their habitats.

Ryan Brennan's involvement with the Wynnstay Hunt has been under scrutiny, especially given the organization's reputation for engaging in activities that threaten local wildlife. During the investigation led by West Mercia Police, PC Jono Lightfoot emphasized the seriousness with which wildlife crimes are treated. He stated, “At West Mercia we take wildlife crime very seriously and will investigate any reports we receive of people interfering with protected animals, such as badgers.”

In court, Brennan was sentenced to a ten-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for one year. This means that while he will not serve time immediately, any further wildlife offenses within the next year could result in the actual imprisonment of Brennan. The judge's decision aims to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar illegal activities.

PC Lightfoot expressed satisfaction with the outcome, adding, “We are pleased with the sentence handed to Brennan by the judge, and we hope this sends a strong message to anyone who plans on carrying out wildlife crimes.” The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to protect vulnerable species and uphold wildlife protection laws in the region, including in the areas surrounding Ruabon, Wrexham, and the broader counties affected by such illegal activities.
