RUSSELL WARD FROM LEAMINGTON SPA AND PERSHORE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF PUPILS
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Leamington Spa and Pershore, Russell Ward, a 31-year-old sports teacher, was sentenced to three years in prison for multiple counts of sexual misconduct involving his students. The offences took place during the mid-1990s at a school in Pershore, Worcestershire, where Ward was employed as a physical education instructor.Ward, who hails from Leamington Spa, pleaded guilty to ten charges of indecent assault. Additionally, he requested that three other related offences be taken into account during the sentencing process. The court heard that Ward had devised a series of fabricated exercises under the pretense of physical training, which he used as a means to inappropriately touch and assault pupils under his supervision.
Further disturbing details emerged during the trial, revealing that Ward had secretly filmed some of the children in various states of undress. This revelation added a sinister layer to the allegations, highlighting the extent of his misconduct. The court was also informed that a parent had lodged a formal complaint after discovering that Ward had been taking photographs of certain pupils in their underwear and even when they were naked.
Ward claimed that his reasons for photographing the children were solely to monitor their physical development, a justification that did little to mitigate the severity of his actions. Following the allegations, Ward resigned from his teaching position in 1999. Despite this, he was able to continue his education and secured a place at a college in Leamington Spa.
However, his past actions caught up with him when he was arrested in 2004. As part of his sentence, Ward will also be required to register as a sex offender, ensuring that he remains under supervision and scrutiny for the foreseeable future. The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and the wider community, raising ongoing concerns about safeguarding and the protection of children in educational settings.
