ROYCE MACKEET FROM LYDD SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN KENT
In March 2013, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse culminated in the sentencing of Royce Mackett, a resident of The Green in Lydd, who was sentenced to a lengthy 14-year prison term for heinous crimes committed against a young girl. The court proceedings revealed a deeply troubling history of abuse that spanned nearly two decades.Royce Mackett, aged 53 at the time, was convicted of two counts of indecent assault and engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 13. The allegations detailed that Mackett had engaged in sexual acts with the victim, who was a minor at the time, and had also subjected her to degrading treatment involving urination while she was in a bathtub. Despite his denial of the charges, the evidence presented in Canterbury Crown Court was compelling enough to secure a conviction.
The court heard that the abuse took place approximately 19 years prior to the trial, with the victim remaining anonymous to protect her identity. Judge Adele Williams addressed Mackett directly, emphasizing that his conviction was based on “clear and compelling evidence” of his sexual offences. She expressed her disapproval of his lack of remorse and his apparent inability to comprehend the gravity of his actions.
Judge Williams stated, “You have absolutely no insight into your behaviour. You have shown no remorse or regard for your victim.” She further expressed concern about Mackett’s potential risk to the public, indicating that his dangerousness had been clearly established during the trial.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Mackett had a long-standing criminal record dating back to 1975. His past convictions included offences related to vehicle crime, dishonesty, battery, public order offences, and racially aggravated harassment of a police officer in Wales. As part of his sentence, Mackett was also subjected to a lifelong sexual offences prevention order, restricting his future conduct and contact.
DCI Andrew Pritchard of Kent Police commented on the case, praising the bravery of the victim for coming forward and enduring the lengthy trial. He acknowledged the challenges faced by investigators in cases involving historical abuse, especially when significant time has passed since the offences occurred. Pritchard emphasized the police’s commitment to thoroughly investigating all reports of abuse and providing support to victims during what is often a very difficult period in their lives.
Overall, the case highlights the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address such serious crimes, regardless of the passage of time.
