ROY MOSEDALE AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN BROWNHILLS AND MORECAMBE

A man accused of committing a series of severe sexual offences against multiple women and girls has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term exceeding 26 years. Roy Mosedale, 61 years old, who is also known by the alias Paul Higginson, carried out these hate-filled crimes in the locations of Morecambe and the West Midlands, including Brownhills. His criminal activities spanned several years and involved disturbing incidents that finally led to his apprehension and conviction.

The investigation into Mosedale’s actions was jointly conducted by Lancashire Police and West Midlands Police. Their efforts culminated in his sentencing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, where the judge imposed a sentence totaling 26 years and seven months. This sentence comprises a 21-year and seven-month imprisonment, coupled with an extended five-year licence period, ensuring close supervision upon release.

Mosedale pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges, including rape, indecent assault, and possession of indecent images. Under the current legal framework, he is only eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence, which means he will remain incarcerated for a substantial period.

The criminal conduct in Morecambe involved two young girls and was reported to Lancashire Police earlier this year, in March. During the ongoing investigations, Mosedale was actively evading detection under his pseudonym, Paul Higginson. Authorities issued a social media appeal with details about his appearance, notably including descriptions of two distinctive tattoos: a cartoon parrot and an image of a bare-chested woman with bird-like features. These identifying marks helped in tracking him down.

Approximately a week after the appeal was issued, Mosedale voluntarily surrendered himself at Bromsgrove Police Station. During his voluntary arrest, he disclosed his real identity as Roy Mosedale. It later emerged that he was wanted in the Midlands for sexual offences committed there as well. This was due to his failure to appear in court for a trial nearly 20 years ago, which resulted in his fugitive status.

During the sentencing hearing in Wolverhampton, the court heard emotional victim impact statements from two women from Morecambe who had survived his assaults. One of these victims described experiencing flashbacks and resorting to self-harm as a consequence of her trauma. She expressed her hope for healing and recovery, stating, “I just hope once this is all over and done with, I can hopefully start regaining my trust and get on with my life.”

The second victim shared her pain, revealing that she had attempted to take her own life twice, struggling immensely to come to terms with what she had endured at his hands.

In addition to the significant prison term, Mosedale was subject to a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order. This legal measure aims to prevent him from reoffending and to protect the public from future harm.

Detective Sergeant Matt Entwistle of Lancaster Police commented on the case, saying, “This was a case involving a number of victims, and justice has finally caught up with Roy Mosedale. The victims have shown remarkable bravery, and the sentence reflects the seriousness of his offending. A dangerous offender has been removed from the streets and is now behind bars.”
