ROSS MORTON AND THE SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE IN NEWCASTLE AND SUNDERLAND

In a case that has spanned nearly a decade, Ross Morton, a former NHS computer support specialist from Newcastle, has finally faced justice after being linked to the disturbing possession and creation of indecent images of children.

The lengthy legal process was marked by significant delays and procedural mishaps, notably including police losing critical evidence, which contributed to the case taking seven years from initial arrest to sentencing.

The trouble began in December 2014, when police officers executed a search at Morton’s residence in Sunderland.

During this raid, authorities uncovered hundreds of indecent photographs and videos on his mobile device.

The images were particularly egregious, featuring children as young as four years old.

In addition to the visual content, investigators found that Morton had used search terms indicating an active interest in such material.

At that stage, he was released under investigation, which meant he was not formally charged but remained under suspicions.

Later interviews in 2016 revealed further disturbing details.

Police uncovered chat logs on the Kik messaging platform, in which Morton engaged in conversations that alluded to films involving a six-year-old girl.

Prosecutor Andrew Findlay clarified that Morton claimed these dialogues were merely role-playing and maintained he faced no charges related to this chat history.

Despite this, the investigation continued, with Morton being placed under investigation once more.

The case took another significant turn in July 2018 when police visited a property in Longbenton, North Tyneside.

There, they seized additional electronic devices, leading to the discovery of hundreds more indecent images, including some of the most serious category, featuring children as young as four and five.

During subsequent interviews, Morton admitted to accessing indecent images via the dark web, claiming he had been unaware of its existence until earlier investigations.

He stated he was driven by curiosity rather than arousal, and expressed that the material made him physically sick.

Ross Morton, aged 28 at the time of sentencing, of Station Road, Gosforth, Newcastle, ultimately pleaded guilty to six counts of producing indecent images of children and possessing an extreme pornographic image.

His sentence was an 18-month prison term, suspended for two years.

Additionally, he was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work, undergo a sex offenders treatment program, and abide by a sexual harm prevention order for the next ten years.

It was noted during sentencing that the entire process was marred by an “extraordinary amount of time”—the delays linked primarily to police losing the evidence at one point and then rediscovering it, which extended the timeline unnecessarily.

In court, Recorder Jamie Hill QC was sharply critical of the lengthy delay, stating, “The fact is children who are photographed or filmed are essentially being abused.

The creation of those images is fuelled by the market of people who want to view them.” He expressed difficulty understanding why the case had taken so long, emphasizing that Morton had been awaiting sentencing for seven years.

The judge noted that the delays included both the loss and later recovery of exhibits, and even after police found additional images three years prior, further delays ensued.

Though the sentence was initially suspended, Recorder Hill decided to incorporate the findings of a probation assessment which indicated Morton posed a low risk of reoffending and could lead a constructive life.

Stuart Graham, representing Morton, expressed remorse, describing how the defendant’s actions had ruined his career—a promising role in NHS IT support—and predicted he would now face dismissal.

He highlighted the delays and alleged lack of police communication, which reportedly caused Morton distress and feelings of revulsion.

Graham also mentioned that Morton had engaged in charity work and was trying to make amends despite the shame and the serious nature of his offenses.

Responding to the case, a Northumbria Police spokesperson stated, “We are committed to bringing cases to court in a timely manner and working with our criminal justice partners to help ensure this happens.

We recognize that on this occasion there has been a delay.

We are, however, pleased that justice has been carried out.

We will ensure any learning points from this case are taken forward.”
