ROSIE ZOLLA FROM ST AUSTELL SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO PET CAT IN NEWQUAY

Rosie Zolla, born on November 12, 1993, and residing on North Street in St Austell, was involved in a disturbing case of animal cruelty that took place in Newquay. The incident, which garnered significant attention, involved the tragic death of her pet cat, Nana McPhee, a black and white male feline she had cared for for approximately six months.

On February 19, 2021, Zolla’s actions came under scrutiny after reports emerged that she had deliberately drowned her cat following an incident where the animal caused damage in her kitchen on Trembath Crescent. According to court records and investigations, Zolla took Nana McPhee upstairs from her residence and placed him in a bathtub. It was alleged that she held the cat underwater, possibly submerging him completely, leading to his death. The post-mortem examination confirmed that the cat died due to drowning, with additional injuries including blunt trauma to the face and a skin injury near the anus. Veterinary pathologist Dr. Taylor indicated that Nana McPhee would have suffered considerable distress and pain leading up to his death, and there was evidence suggesting he may have been held underwater for an extended period.

Following the drowning, Zolla reportedly placed her deceased pet’s body into a freezer, an act that further compounded the case’s severity. During court proceedings, the RSPCA prosecutor, Tamsin Murphy, detailed the events, stating that RSPCA inspector Kempson, accompanied by a police officer, attended Zolla’s residence after receiving reports of her actions. Zolla admitted to the officers that she had put the cat in the bath and subsequently placed its body in the freezer. She explained that she had owned Nana McPhee for about six months and, when questioned about his death, she simply stated that she had put him in the bath.

Further interviews conducted on February 24 by RSPCA officers revealed additional details. Zolla claimed that her cat had caused damage to her kitchen and that she left him in the bath because he had “something coming out of its bum.” When asked about the circumstances of his death, she expressed uncertainty, indicating she was unsure exactly how the cat had died. The court heard that Zolla did not show remorse for her actions, and her attitude during the proceedings was described as lacking contrition.

In her defense, Zolla’s lawyer argued that she was suffering from significant mental health issues and alcoholism at the time of the incident. The lawyer emphasized that she had since made efforts to improve her life, engaging with support services such as We Are With You. He highlighted that she was now in a stable relationship, with her partner supporting her, and that they were expecting a baby in June. Additionally, she had been receiving treatment for her alcoholism, indicating a commitment to rehabilitation.

After reviewing the case, the magistrates took a considerable amount of time to deliberate. Upon their return, they announced that Zolla would not face immediate imprisonment but warned that she was on very thin ice. The court acknowledged the gravity of her actions, describing the cruelty as “horrible” and “absolutely unacceptable.” The magistrates explained that their decision to suspend the sentence was based on her previous good character and the belief in her potential for rehabilitation. They clarified that the suspension did not diminish the seriousness of the crime but was a measure to encourage her reform.

In their final remarks, the magistrates expressed their concerns about her capacity to care for animals, including humans, given her current circumstances. They ordered a probation officer to monitor her progress, especially considering her pregnancy. The court sentenced Zolla to an 18-week prison term, suspended for two years, along with a £400 fine to cover costs and a £128 victim surcharge. She was also mandated to undergo mental health and alcohol treatment programs and was banned from keeping any pets for ten years, a restriction that cannot be appealed early despite her defense’s protests. The case underscores the ongoing issues of animal cruelty and the importance of accountability, even when individuals are facing personal challenges.
