RONNIE CALVER FROM CLACTON-ON-SEA SENTENCED FOR NEGLECTING DOG WITH SEVERE HEALTH ISSUES

Ronnie Calver, born around 1988 and residing on Berkeley Road in Clacton-on-Sea, has been convicted in connection with the neglect of his dog, Marley, a cross-breed, which suffered from serious health problems that went unaddressed for an extended period. The case highlights the tragic consequences of neglecting animal welfare and the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Calver was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to Marley by failing to investigate and treat her worsening health condition. Despite the evident signs of distress, he did not seek veterinary assistance or take steps to alleviate her pain. However, he was acquitted of a separate charge alleging that he failed to provide adequate nutrition for the dog, indicating that the court did not find sufficient evidence to prove nutritional neglect.

The court proceedings revealed that Marley was taken into the care of the RSPCA in June 2021 after being removed from Calver’s home by another individual. Animal Rescue Officer Rebecca Yarrow provided a detailed account of Marley’s condition upon rescue. She described the dog as lying on the ground, unwilling to stand, with a sunken face and lacking muscle tone, which are clear signs of severe malnutrition and distress. Additionally, Marley had a large, hard mass on the left side of her pelvis, which was indicative of a serious underlying health issue.

Following her rescue, Marley was taken to a veterinary clinic where she was administered pain relief and made as comfortable as possible. Further examinations revealed that the mass was a bone tumour that had aggressively invaded her lower pelvis and spine, causing immense pain and suffering. The veterinary team concluded that her condition was so severe that the most humane course of action was to euthanize her to prevent further suffering.

A veterinarian involved in her care stated, “I believe without doubt that this dog was suffering due to the degree of pain she was in. This suffering could have been reduced by pain relief medication in the weeks preceding her being presented to us. I believe this dog would likely have been suffering for a period of at least four to six weeks due to the size of the mass and the amount of destruction of the bone seen on the radiograph. The needs of this animal were clearly not being met as it would have been very clear even to a novice owner that this dog was in pain and was unable to walk as a normal dog should be able to.”

In sentencing, the court imposed an 18-month community order on Calver, which includes a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 150 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £1,000 in costs. As part of the penalty, Calver is banned from owning or keeping dogs for five years, a restriction that will last until April 2028. This case underscores the critical importance of responsible pet care and the devastating consequences of neglecting vulnerable animals in the Clacton-on-Sea area.
