RONALD/PAUL BLANNIN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN CIRENCESTER

In June 2018, a man from Cirencester, Gloucestershire, identified as Ronald Blannin, also known as Paul Blannin, was sentenced to serve three years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses committed against two young boys during the 1990s. The court also mandated that Blannin be registered on the sex offenders register for the remainder of his life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.

Blannin, aged 69 and residing on Stratton Heights in Cirencester, was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault. The incidents took place between 1994 and 1998, during which he exploited his position of trust to abuse the victims. One of the victims, who chose to waive his right to anonymity, publicly shared the profound impact the abuse had on his life, describing feelings of pain and anger that have persisted over the years.

During the sentencing hearing at Gloucester Crown Court, Judge Ian Lawrie QC addressed the court, emphasizing the predatory nature of Blannin’s actions. The judge stated that Blannin “repeatedly took advantage” of his victims and described him as someone who “harboured a dark secret.” The judge further remarked that the effects of Blannin’s offending had been significant and long-lasting, underscoring the profound trauma inflicted upon the victims.

Blannin was convicted on two counts of indecent assault following an earlier trial, which also saw him found not guilty of two additional charges. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on four other charges, which the court has asked to be left on file, indicating that those cases remain unresolved but not dismissed.

One of the victims, Conrad Robbins from Bristol, courageously spoke out about his experiences. He recounted being “touched inappropriately” by Blannin when he was between the ages of eight and ten. Robbins expressed a desire to help others who might have suffered similar abuse, emphasizing the importance of sharing their stories.

“Generally, when we were alone, he would find an opportunity to touch me,” Robbins explained. “It’s caused me a lot of pain and anger in my life. I’ve had some problems because of it, but I’ve learned to turn that pain into my strength.” He also highlighted the significance of speaking out, stating, “It’s really positive to be able to put that behind me now, and I want others to do the same.” Robbins’s testimony aimed to encourage victims of abuse to come forward and seek support, fostering a message of resilience and healing in the face of past trauma.
