JAILED: TWO HOUSE MASTERS WHO SEXUALLY ABUSED PUPIL AT BOARDING SCHOOL
He engaged in sexual activity with the minor twice in his school room at a now-closed school in Bushey.Last Friday, Mackey, aged 55 and residing on Butt Road in Hinkley, Leicestershire, appeared at St Albans Crown Court to be sentenced after a jury found him guilty earlier this month of attempted buggery.
He received a five-year prison sentence.
His co-defendant, Weiner, now 67 and without a fixed address, also appeared for sentencing after being convicted of two counts of buggery involving the boy during his teenage years.
Weiner admitted to a charge of indecently assaulting the minor and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
The court was informed that a third teacher at the school had also abused the boy, but this individual had died before he could be brought to justice.
It was only years later, once the victim was an adult, that he reported the abuse to police, leading to the arrest and identification of Mackey and Weiner, by then the school had already closed.
During the trial, the jury was told that Mackey, in his twenties at the time, began grooming the boy after starting his first teaching position.
He took the boy on trips outside of school, including a trip to Brighton in 1989 where they stayed in a hotel together.
That night, Mackey performed a sexual act on the boy.
Evidence presented at the trial revealed that Weiner had deliberately targeted boys for sexual exploitation.
It was stated that after abusing the boy, Weiner committed further offenses involving other young boys.
In 1999, he was convicted at Guildford Crown Court of four counts of indecent assault on three boys at another boarding school.
Additionally, in 2015, he was convicted at Canterbury Crown Court of indecent assault on a young boy from the mid-1980s, receiving a 21-month prison sentence.
Judge Andrew Bright QC sentenced the two men, describing Mackey’s abuse as “an appalling breach of trust.” He explained that the victim had limited family contact and that the assault occurred late at night in a hotel room far from home.
For Weiner, the judge stated that he had actively sought out boys at the school for sexual gratification and continued offending after the initial abuse.
Both men were ordered to comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which bans them from contact with any boy under 16 unless accompanied by an adult who is aware of their convictions.
Judge Bright also indicated that the Disclosure and Barring Service would likely impose further restrictions, preventing the men from working with children in the future.
