RONALD THOMAS FROM BARRY SENTENCED IN CARDIFF FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In July 2016, Ronald Thomas, a 65-year-old man from Barry with no prior criminal record, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing indecent images of children.

The case was heard at Cardiff Crown Court, where the severity of his actions and their impact on his personal life were thoroughly examined.

Thomas, who was a Taekwondo instructor, appeared in the dock visibly emotional as the sentence was handed down.

His solicitor, Nick Hartman, emphasized that his client’s reputation and marriage had been severely damaged by the allegations, stating, “His reputation and his marriage are now in shreds.” The charges stemmed from a police operation conducted on March 7, when officers executed a search warrant at Thomas’s residence on Guys Road, Barry.

During the search, law enforcement officials seized a laptop computer from an upstairs room.

Forensic analysis of the device revealed the presence of multiple indecent images of children.

The images included both still photographs and moving pictures, involving children as young as two years old, with other images depicting children aged five to twelve.

Specifically, the images were categorized into three levels of severity: 15 images classified as Category A, the most serious, along with 22 Category B images and 26 Category C images.

Prosecutor David Pugh detailed that the children depicted ranged in age from two to twelve years old, with some images showing children as young as two or three, and others aged five to six or ten to twelve.

During police interviews, Thomas admitted that he was the sole user of the computer and acknowledged having engaged in discussions with others about adult images.

He claimed that he initially deleted the indecent images but later returned to viewing them.

Thomas expressed remorse, stating he was “totally ashamed” of his actions.

Mr.

Pugh highlighted that the presence of moving images and the young ages of the children involved were aggravating factors in the case.

Hartman, representing Thomas, stressed that his client was generally regarded as a community volunteer and had maintained a good reputation prior to these events.

He noted that Thomas had been cooperative with police from the outset, describing him as “honest, frank and open.” The solicitor also pointed out that the impact of the conviction had been devastating for Thomas, who had been aware of the potential prison sentence for four months.

Despite this, Hartman emphasized that Thomas showed genuine remorse and had good prospects for rehabilitation, although he acknowledged that Thomas was responsible for his own downfall and found it difficult to explain his motives.

In sentencing, Recorder Catherine Brown acknowledged that Thomas’s record was clean before these offences and stressed that the crimes were not victimless.

She noted that the offences likely spanned over a two-year period and had a profoundly damaging effect on those involved.

The court also considered the personal toll on Thomas, including the fact that his wife of 48 years had left him.

As part of the sentence, the court imposed a Sexual Prevention Order lasting ten years and required Thomas to register as a sex offender for the same period.

The judge emphasized that such conduct was unacceptable in society, stating, “This is not conduct society tolerates.” Additionally, Thomas was ordered to pay a court surcharge of £100, and his computer was to be forfeited to the authorities, ensuring that the evidence of his crimes would be permanently removed from his possession.
