RONALD SMITH OF COLCHESTER JAILED FOR DECADES OF SEXUAL ABUSE ON YOUNG BOYS
In a case that has shocked the community of Colchester, Ronald Smith, a 70-year-old man with deep ties to the local Catholic church, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of more than four decades. The conviction follows a detailed and lengthy trial at Ipswich Crown Court, where the jury found Smith guilty of multiple counts related to the sexual abuse of eight young boys.
Smith, who resided on Winchester Road in Colchester, was accused of abusing boys in various settings, including private homes, vehicles, and even at a youth sports club.
His actions, which spanned from the early 1970s to 2014, have left a lasting scar on the victims, some of whom were under ten years old at the time of the abuse.
The court heard that Smith, a member of The Knights of Saint Columba—a Catholic men's organization that vows to support the spiritual development of young people—used his position of trust to prey on vulnerable children.
Throughout the three-week trial, Smith denied 16 counts of sexual offenses, forcing the victims to relive their trauma as they provided evidence against him.
The jury, composed of six men and six women, ultimately convicted him of 12 counts, including rape, indecent assault, and sexual assault.
The verdict was reached after careful deliberation, with ten counts being unanimous and two decided by a majority of ten to two.
Smith was acquitted of three other counts of indecent assault.
The timeline of his offenses is particularly disturbing.
Between 1972 and 1977, Smith was convicted of two counts of indecent assault against a boy under ten, involving groping and coercing the child to touch him in a car.
In 1975, he assaulted a second boy, leading to two counts of indecent assault.
From 1980 to 1983, a third victim was subjected to indecent assault and forced sexual acts, for which Smith received two convictions.
During this period, he also groped another young boy in 1982, and between 1980 and 1983, a fifth victim was sexually assaulted.
At the time of these offenses, Smith was a prominent figure within the Colchester Catholic community, actively involved in Saint James the Less and Saint Helen Catholic Church located on Priory Street.
He organized parish family events and appeared to be a respected member of the community, which made his betrayal even more devastating to those who looked up to him.
The most recent allegations date back to 2014, when an eighth boy was abused.
Smith was convicted of one count of rape, ten counts of indecent assault, and one count of sexual assault against boys who are protected by anonymity laws.
The jury's decision was largely unanimous, with some counts reaching a majority of ten to two.
The court has yet to reach a verdict on one remaining count involving an alleged sexual assault of a child under 13.
Detective Constable Jim Finnigan commented on the case, stating, “This has been a long investigation into child sexual assaults covering the last 40 years.
It is a tremendous result for the many victims in this case.
I hope it will bring some sense of closure for them.
They have shown courage in coming forward and providing their evidence.
They have remained steadfast in working with the police and helping to bring the defendant to justice.” Ronald Smith has been remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court on September 2.
The community and the victims await justice, which will hopefully bring some measure of peace after decades of suffering.
