ROMMEL TORRALBA SHOCKS WARINGTON WITH HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE CASE
In December 2019, a disturbing case emerged from Warrington involving Rommel Torralba, a 41-year-old man whose actions have left a young girl on the brink of despair and contemplating suicide. The court heard how Torralba, residing on Lovely Lane in the Bewsey area of Warrington, engaged in a prolonged pattern of sexual abuse against a vulnerable pre-teen girl, beginning when she was still very young.
According to the evidence presented at Liverpool Crown Court, Torralba subjected the girl to repeated molestation, forcing her to perform sexual acts on him and also engaging in acts upon her.
The victim, demonstrating remarkable courage, eventually confronted Torralba about the years of suffering inflicted upon her.
However, instead of remorse, he brazenly claimed that she was the one who initiated the sexual activities, attempting to shift blame onto her.
Prosecutor Mark Connor detailed that Torralba, who was then living on Lovely Lane in Warrington, told the girl that such sexual conduct was normal.
The girl was reportedly afraid of refusing his demands, fearing his temper and potential violence.
Her emotional distress was so severe that she later described feeling unable to react or know what to do, recognizing only in hindsight how vulnerable she had been at the time.
In her victim personal statement, she expressed her pain, stating, "I didn't really know how to react or what to do.
When I look back now I can see I was young and vulnerable.
His actions were selfish – he was only concerned about himself, not what I felt like and the damage he has caused." Torralba admitted to some of the offences during police interviews but maintained denial of others up until the trial date.
Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to two counts of inciting sexual activity with a child and twelve counts of sexual activity with a child.
The court heard that these crimes spanned several years and only came to light because of the victim’s bravery in speaking out.
Judge Cummings addressed the court, emphasizing the profound impact of Torralba’s actions.
He stated, "It’s clear from the victim personal statement that these offences have had a very serious effect on a vulnerable young person." The judge further remarked, "She was driven virtually to the point of suicide.
The responsibility for all that lies squarely with you and no one else.
It is all your fault." While the judge acknowledged that Torralba expressed remorse, he noted that the victim’s detailed statement did not believe this remorse was genuine.
The victim viewed his expressions of regret as insincere, perceiving them as self-pity and manipulation.
The judge highlighted that the abuse was ongoing for many years and was only uncovered because of the victim’s courage to confront her abuser.
Despite initial denials, Torralba eventually went to the police, but even then, he attempted to shift blame onto the girl, claiming she had led the sexual activity.
In a preliminary hearing, Torralba admitted to some offences but falsely claimed they represented all his crimes and denied abusing the girl until she was 14.
The court found these denials to be false, noting that the girl had to give evidence in a video-recorded hearing, which demonstrated her resilience and the severity of the case.
Judge Cummings condemned his dishonesty, stating, "Those were both lies," and emphasized that such falsehoods only added to the trauma faced by the victim.
For his crimes, Torralba was sentenced to 13 years and nine months in prison.
The court also imposed an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim and mandated that Torralba sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and safeguarding measures.
This case underscores the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of bravery in confronting perpetrators, as well as the justice system’s role in holding offenders accountable.
