ROMAN KROK FROM NORMANTON SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE IN DERBY PARK

In March 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Derby involving a young girl and an 18-year-old man named Roman Krok, who hails from Normanton. The victim, a 14-year-old girl, was subjected to a terrifying ordeal after she was followed through a local park, specifically Sherwood Recreation Ground, which is situated adjacent to Pear Tree railway station.

According to court reports, Krok's actions began when he approached the girl as she was walking to a nearby shop. He was observed sitting on a bench, having smoked cannabis, before initiating a conversation with her. The situation quickly escalated as Krok began to follow her, and eventually, he forcefully pushed her against a fence. During this assault, he made disturbing comments, telling her, “I love you, we could get married, I can tell you’re a virgin,” revealing a troubling attitude and intent.

The girl, overwhelmed with fear, was described as being “frozen in shock” as Krok placed his hands on her private parts and attempted to force himself upon her. Despite her efforts to push him away, Krok persisted, following her and trying to carry out a second assault against her near a van. The court was told that Krok made three separate attempts to rape the young girl during this harrowing encounter.

After the attack, the girl managed to escape and immediately returned home, where she confided in her family. Her family then contacted the police, providing a description of Krok, which led to his arrest. Recognizing him from the victim’s account, law enforcement detained Krok at his residence on Holcombe Street in Normanton.

During the court proceedings, the victim submitted a statement expressing her distress and ongoing emotional impact. She revealed that she now feels judged by her community, especially at her church, and has altered her behavior and clothing choices out of fear and shame. Her sleep has been disturbed, and her sense of safety has been deeply affected.

Prosecutor Sarah Slater detailed the incident, emphasizing the victim’s vulnerability and the repeated nature of Krok’s attempts. The court heard that Krok was on bail for a recent robbery at the time of the attack, which added to the seriousness of his actions. Krok pleaded guilty to attempted rape, acknowledging his guilt in this case.

Defense lawyer Dawn Pritchard provided background on Krok’s troubled upbringing. She explained that he moved to the UK from Slovakia at age 10, and his childhood was marked by neglect and instability. She described how he was introduced to Class A drugs at the age of 13 and suggested that he believed the girl was 16, due to his lack of understanding of sexual boundaries.

Judge Shaun Smith QC addressed the court, noting that Krok was 17 at the time of the offense, which meant he was to be sentenced under juvenile guidelines. The judge expressed concern over Krok’s disturbing attitude towards women and his history of criminal behavior, including a string of robbery convictions and a previous sexual assault on a fellow school pupil when he was just 12.

In his sentencing, Judge Smith ordered Krok to serve four years and nine months in a young offender’s institution. Additionally, Krok was placed on the sex offender’s register for life and was issued a seven-year sexual harm prevention order. The judge also mentioned that a decision regarding Krok’s potential deportation would be made by the Home Office, considering his status and background.

This case highlights the serious consequences of Krok’s actions and underscores the ongoing impact on the victim, whose life has been profoundly affected by the terrifying ordeal in Derby.
