ROGER SCOURFIELD FROM NEWPORT CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF ILLEGAL IMAGES OF CHILDREN AND EXTREME PORNOGRAPHY
In March 2019, authorities in Newport uncovered a disturbing case involving a local delivery driver named Roger Scourfield, aged 56, who was found in possession of a significant collection of illegal and highly disturbing images. The police arrested Scourfield at his residence on Dunn Square in Newport after discovering that he possessed a total of 507 indecent images of children, along with 754 images depicting extreme pornography, and an additional 24 prohibited images.
These prohibited images included computer-generated imagery and cartoon drawings of a sexual nature, which are classified as illegal under current laws.
During the arrest, prosecutor Leah Pollard emphasized the severity of the material found, stating, “Prohibited images include computer generated imagery or cartoon drawings of a sexual nature.” When questioned by authorities about the images, Scourfield admitted responsibility, acknowledging that he was the person responsible for possessing the illicit material.
In court, Scourfield pleaded guilty to five charges related to the possession of indecent images of children.
Despite the gravity of the charges, he was spared immediate imprisonment and instead was sentenced to a two-year community order.
Judge Neil Bidder QC addressed the court, highlighting the seriousness of such offenses, saying, “They’re not just images on a screen, they’re real people who are suffering.
You downloading and looking at these images only encourages that abuse.” In addition to the community order, Scourfield was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay costs amounting to £340.
Furthermore, he was mandated to sign a sexual harm prevention order, which will remain in effect for five years, as a measure to prevent any future offenses.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and judicial authorities in Newport to combat the distribution and possession of illegal and harmful images, aiming to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse.
