EX-DJ ROGER POND OF GILLINGHAM SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN KENT

In October 1998, a former radio personality from BBC Radio Kent found himself at the center of a serious criminal case involving multiple allegations of child sexual offenses. Roger Pond, aged 46 and residing on St Mary's Road in Gillingham, Kent, was convicted and subsequently sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 14 years for his involvement in a series of heinous crimes against minors.

During his court proceedings, Pond pleaded guilty to a total of 41 separate charges, which included three counts of buggery committed on young boys, 19 counts of indecent assault on girls, and nine counts of indecent assault on boys. Additionally, he admitted to 10 counts of taking indecent photographs of children, a charge that underscores the disturbing nature of his offenses.

The sentencing took place at Maidstone Crown Court, where Judge David Griffiths delivered a stern judgment. He further highlighted the extent of Pond’s abuse, noting, "In this case, 14 young people fell victim to your sexual appetite over a period of four years and nine months. During the period covered by this indictment, you have systematically abused these children, rising to the buggery of two young boys."

Prosecutor William Clegg QC provided additional context, revealing that Pond had sexually abused a total of 14 children whose ages ranged from as young as seven to as old as 16. The case shocked the local community in Gillingham and the wider Kent area, as details of Pond’s misconduct emerged, tarnishing his reputation as a choir master and music teacher.
