ROGER CURTIS FROM TYNEMOUTH FACES JAIL OVER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Tynemouth, pensioner Roger Curtis is facing serious legal consequences after a lengthy period of collecting and possessing explicit images of children. The investigation into Curtis’s activities revealed that he had accumulated a horrifying collection of over 1,800 illicit photographs depicting minors as young as two years old. These images were discovered when police executed a search warrant and seized electronic devices belonging to Curtis in August 2019. The court was informed that among the collection, 83 images were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe form of abuse involving penetrative sexual acts. The remaining images included 163 in Category B and a staggering 1,635 in Category C, illustrating a pattern of disturbing behavior spanning several years.
Roger Curtis, aged 70 and residing on Monkstone Crescent in Tynemouth, was arrested following the discovery of this repulsive collection. He subsequently pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child and one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child. His guilty plea was entered before North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, which considered the gravity of the case.
Prosecutor James Long detailed the extent of Curtis’s offending, emphasizing that the collection was amassed over a significant period prior to August 1, 2019. He explained that the children depicted ranged in age from two to 14 years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of Curtis’s actions over many years.
During the hearing, District Judge Paul Currer acknowledged the seriousness of the case and decided that Curtis should be transferred to Newcastle Crown Court for sentencing. Curtis was granted bail with the condition that he appear at the Crown Court on May 13. The judge also ordered Curtis to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
Judge Currer made it clear that due to the severity of the offences, the case could not be adequately dealt with at the magistrates’ level and required the attention of the higher court. The community awaits the upcoming sentencing hearing, which will determine the extent of Curtis’s punishment for his heinous crimes.
