ROBERT TAYLOR OF STOURBRIDGE ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL

In a case that has shocked the community of Stourbridge, Robert Taylor, a man with a troubling history, was spared immediate imprisonment after being found in possession of a significant collection of child exploitation material. The incident came to light during a court hearing held at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday, September 4, where Taylor faced serious allegations related to the possession of indecent images of children.

According to court records, Taylor, aged 29 and residing on Hagley Road, was discovered to have accumulated approximately 1,500 indecent photographs and videos depicting minors, including a distressing image of a nine-month-old baby. Despite the gravity of these findings, the judge opted to impose a sentence of eight months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, effectively allowing Taylor to remain free under strict conditions.

The background of Taylor’s criminal history reveals a disturbing pattern. In 2002, he was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison following a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man named Richard Carrington. This sentence was later reduced on appeal to five years. After his release from incarceration, Taylor struggled to reintegrate into society, a challenge compounded by his ongoing personal issues.

During the court proceedings, it was highlighted that Taylor had turned to the internet in search of increasingly disturbing material. His defense lawyer, John Attwood, described Taylor as a “lonely, isolated young man with low self-esteem” who, upon release, fell into patterns of drinking, smoking cannabis, and spending extensive time online. Mr. Attwood explained that Taylor’s computer had become “almost a surrogate friend,” and that his searches led him to websites containing highly inappropriate images of children.

Attwood further stated, “These images came to light and he went in search of other material that was deeply unpleasant. He is ashamed of what he did and full of self-loathing.” The court was also informed that Taylor’s descent into viewing such material was linked to the emotional turmoil following the tragic road accident on the Stourbridge to Kidderminster Road in March 2001, which resulted in the death of Richard Carrington. The judge, Robert Trevor-Jones, acknowledged that Taylor’s collection of images was indicative of a troubling progression towards more disturbing content, including images that depicted the physical and emotional exploitation of children.

While the severity of the charges and the nature of the images meant that custody was a consideration, the judge ultimately decided to suspend Taylor’s sentence, citing his remorse and the circumstances of his case. Taylor was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years, placed under supervision for two years, and mandated to attend the Sex Offenders Programme. Additional restrictions included a prohibition on any contact with individuals under 18 without prior approval and a complete ban on internet access.

Prosecutor Alka Brigue revealed that Taylor’s name was uncovered during an investigation into credit card transactions linked to the purchase of the illicit images. The images ranged from those of infants to young girls in their early teens, with some classified at the highest level of severity, level five. Brigue emphasized that the children depicted in the images appeared to be actively sought out by Taylor, indicating deliberate intent.

In response, Mr. Attwood clarified that the images, some with sadistic elements, were solely for Taylor’s personal use and there was no evidence to suggest he was involved in distributing or sharing the material. The court’s decision reflects a complex balance between recognizing the seriousness of the offenses and considering Taylor’s personal circumstances and remorse.
