ROBERT STONEMAN'S DRUG FORTRESS IN PLYMOUTH: SEX OFFENSES AND CONSPIRACY TO SUPPLY HEROIN

In June 2017, Robert Stoneman, now aged 67 and residing at Walkhampton Walk in Leigham, Plymouth, became the focus of a significant criminal case that uncovered a complex web of drug trafficking and serious sexual offenses.

The case, which culminated in his conviction, revealed disturbing details about his involvement in illegal activities within the Plymouth area.

Stoneman's criminal activities came to light following an extensive undercover surveillance operation conducted by police officers.

The operation targeted his residence on Wilton Street, where authorities meticulously monitored his movements and transactions.

Undercover officers, posing as drug users, eventually made arrests, charging him with conspiracy to supply heroin and possession of cocaine with intent to supply, covering the period from January to July 2002.

A key element of the investigation involved the installation of covert cameras that recorded Stoneman utilizing a lane behind his property to store illicit drugs.

These drugs, including heroin and cocaine, were carefully concealed in cling film wraps and medicine bottles, then hidden within the granite walls and outbuildings of neighboring properties—without the owners' consent.

The police also uncovered substantial amounts of cash, including a notable sum of £50,000 hidden within a wall in the roof space between two buildings on his property.

Overall, authorities seized approximately £94,000 in cash, which was subsequently allocated to support drug rehabilitation projects in Plymouth.

During the ten-day trial at Truro Crown Court, the jury was informed that Stoneman's property was heavily secured, with 14 security cameras installed around the area.

Despite the evidence, Stoneman denied allegations that he had constructed what was described as a 'drug dealer's fortress.' Instead, he claimed that his security measures were intended to monitor his tenants.

However, the case took a darker turn when it was revealed that Stoneman had also committed serious sexual offenses.

He pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a girl under the age of 13.

Police found a video package during a raid on his property that showed him engaging in sexual acts with the girl, who was believed to have been abused starting at age 11 in 1979 and continuing until she was 16.

While awaiting trial in Exeter Prison, Stoneman attempted to influence witnesses by offering one of them £8,000 not to testify against him.

When the witness refused, he reportedly threatened to have him killed.

These actions led to additional charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice, for which he was also found guilty.

Stoneman's criminal conviction resulted in an 18-year prison sentence, and the confiscated funds are set to benefit local drug prevention initiatives in Plymouth.

His case highlights the extent of organized drug trafficking and the disturbing sexual offenses linked to his activities, casting a long shadow over the Plymouth community.
