December 2013 Top Valley child sex abuser is jailed for 14 years A MAN who sexually abused a girl for a decade has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. Robert Selby, 44, formerly of Flaxton Way, Top Valley, preyed on the girl to systematically carry out sexual assaults against her. And before she managed to escape his control, he raped her. Selby, was found guilty of 11 sex offences including two of rape, following a five-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court. He has now been sentenced to serve a minimum of 14 years in prison. On his release, he will spend the remainder of his sentence – a period of up to 20 years – on licence. Detective Constable Paula Wilson, of the Child Abuse Investigation Unit, said: “We are pleased with the sentence handed to Selby. “It reflects the horrific nature of the assaults he carried out on this girl, the severe trauma she was subjected to and the fact that she is still coming to terms with what happened – something she will never be able to forget.” And she added: “However, Selby’s manipulative, cruel and selfish behaviour has now been stopped, thanks to the bravery of his victim who came forward after finding the strength and support to do so. She can now start to try and move forward with her life.”
