ROBERT RICKMAN FROM LLANDUDNO AND DAVENTRY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Daventry and Llandudno, Robert Rickman, a member of the Nether Heyford-based Jesus Fellowship, was found guilty of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor and was subsequently placed on probation for a period of three years. The incident involved a 12-year-old girl and took place at one of the Fellowship's centers located in the Daventry area, where both Rickman and the girl were residing at the time.

According to court records, Rickman, who is 21 years old, pleaded guilty to the charges of unlawful sexual intercourse during an earlier hearing. The court was informed that the sexual encounter occurred on multiple occasions, with the most recent being in July, when the girl, who was infatuated with him, met him in the stables at the Fellowship’s center. During this meeting, the girl expressed her feelings, telling Rickman that she wanted to have sex with him because she loved him. This revelation was part of the evidence presented during the trial.

It was also disclosed that Rickman, at first, appeared to be conflicted about the situation. Prosecutor Nicola Smith explained that he was overwhelmed with guilt after the incidents but initially ignored his conscience because he believed the girl had actively pursued him. The court heard that concerns had been raised within the Fellowship prior to the court proceedings, and Rickman had been given appropriate advice by the Fellowship elders. At one point, Rickman told the elders that he found the girl attractive and that her attention was flattering, but he denied any improper conduct. However, he later admitted to the relationship, acknowledging his involvement.

As part of his probation, Rickman is required to stay at a specialized center in Wales for at least a year and to participate in a sex offenders' group therapy program. The court's decision reflects the seriousness of the offense and aims to prevent future harm.

Following the sentencing, a spokesperson for the Jesus Fellowship announced that they would be consulting with Social Services to review and improve their child protection policies. The case has raised questions about safeguarding practices within religious communities and the measures in place to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
