MAN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRLS
A man from the Bristol area, specifically Longwell Green in South Gloucestershire, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing three young girls.Robert Ponter, the individual in question, appeared before Bristol Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to three counts of raping girls under the age of 16.
The victims, whose ages ranged from 11 to 15 at the time of the offenses, endured a series of traumatic experiences over several years.
In addition to the rape charges, Ponter admitted to committing three indecent assault offenses.
Two of these assaults involved a 14-year-old girl, while the third was against another girl of the same age.
The assaults took place within the Bristol area, with incidents spanning from 1998 to 2007, highlighting a prolonged period during which these crimes occurred.
Following his guilty plea, Ponter was sentenced to a substantial term of imprisonment.
Furthermore, he was subjected to an indefinite restraining order that prohibits him from making any contact with his victims, ensuring their safety and peace of mind.
The court also imposed a sexual harm prevention order on him, and he will be registered as a sex offender for an indefinite period, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses.
Reports about Ponter first reached Avon and Somerset Police in 2007 and 2008.
Despite investigations being initiated at that time, authorities stated that there was insufficient evidence to formally charge him with any offenses then.
It was only after a third report was received in 2021 that police revisited the case, re-engaging with victims who had previously reported abuse and gathering additional evidence.
In July 2024, following the culmination of this renewed investigation, Ponter was formally charged with sexually abusing all three victims.
Detective Constable Lucy Heaps, who led the investigation, expressed her thoughts on the case, stating, “Robert Ponter took advantage of three girls over many years, exploiting their young age to carry out his vile crimes.
All three of his victims have demonstrated great courage by reporting what happened to them and by providing evidence which resulted in Ponter pleading guilty to all the offences during his first appearance at court.” She continued, “They continue to have access to specialist support services, and I hope the fact he has been jailed for 14 years gives them a sense of closure.” Detective Heaps also emphasized that investigations remain ongoing and that if any new information or evidence emerges, authorities will revisit the case to pursue justice.
She urged anyone affected by this case to come forward, assuring that support services are available and that all reports will be taken seriously, with efforts made to ensure justice is served for victims.
