ROBERT LEWIS FROM OSWESTRY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT IN SHREWSBURY
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Oswestry, Robert Lewis, a 56-year-old man residing on Monkmoor Drive, has been sentenced to an indeterminate term for the protection of the public after committing a disturbing sexual assault on a nine-year-old girl. The incident took place on the evening of January 24 this year, in the vicinity of Willow Street, Oswestry. According to court proceedings, the young girl was sitting in the back of a car when the assault occurred around 7.30 pm. The court heard that her father was momentarily away, collecting an order from a nearby takeaway, while her mother was seated in the front of the vehicle.
Prosecutor Mark Linkins described the sequence of events, stating that a man, later identified as Robert Lewis, was seen standing close to the vehicle. The girl's mother noticed him and heard him make an inappropriate comment, saying to the girl, “You’re gorgeous, I like you.” The man then walked away but soon turned back and approached the car again. He opened the driver’s side door, leaned inside, and reached toward the girl, taking hold of her hand. The court was told that Lewis then placed his palm on the girl’s thigh, just above the knee, in a clearly sexual manner.
Lewis’s criminal history was also discussed during the trial. It was revealed that he had appeared in court multiple times over the years for a total of 58 offences, including indecent assaults, with records dating back to 1966. His extensive criminal background underscored the severity of his actions and the ongoing risk he posed to the community.
During the hearing, Lewis’s defense attorney, Daniel White, expressed remorse on his client’s behalf, stating that Lewis was deeply sorry for his actions and expressed a desire to change. Mr. White also highlighted that Lewis had a history of traumatising young girls since the 1990s, emphasizing the dangerous pattern of his behavior.
Judge Robin Onions addressed the court, emphasizing the significant threat Lewis posed, especially when under the influence of alcohol. The judge concluded that Lewis represented a substantial risk of serious harm to the public. As a result, he was sentenced to an indeterminate sentence for public protection. The court also specified that Lewis must serve a minimum of one year and 228 days before he can apply for parole, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision to protect potential future victims.
