ROBERT LEAN FROM WARRINGTON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER BEING CAUGHT WITH HUNDREDS OF INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN

In April 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Robert Lean, a resident of Warrington, who was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images depicting children as young as five years old.

The police investigation was triggered when authorities executed a search warrant at his residence in Callands, Warrington, uncovering a USB stick containing over 300 vile pictures and videos.

On Monday, April 23, 2018, officers from the National Crime Agency acted on intelligence that led them to raid Lean’s home on Pendine Close.

During the operation, the police detained Lean, who was present at the scene, and seized several electronic devices, including a Toshiba laptop, a Samsung tablet, and the USB stick.

The evidence collected was substantial and deeply troubling.

During police interviews, Lean admitted that the USB device held indecent images but denied any sexual interest in children.

Instead, he claimed that his actions were driven by boredom and curiosity, attempting to downplay the severity of his behavior.

However, forensic analysis of the seized devices revealed a total of 339 indecent images and videos featuring boys and girls as young as five years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of his collection.

Despite the gravity of the evidence, Lean, aged 62, was spared a custodial sentence.

Instead, at Liverpool Crown Court, he was sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images and one count of possessing indecent images.

The presiding judge, Neil Flewitt, emphasized the seriousness of the offense during sentencing, stating, “Some of these images were depicting the most unpleasant forms of abuse against children.

I want you to understand the seriousness of your offending, because in each and every one of those images is an abused child.” Judge Flewitt further explained that the existence of such material fuels a market for child abuse images, which is why offenders like Lean are responsible for perpetuating this cycle of harm.

He warned Lean to reflect on his actions, stating, “You need to think about that the next time you go onto a computer and consider searching for this type of material.

Having been given this chance, if you do it again you will be back here and you will be going straight into custody.” In addition to the unpaid work, Lean was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and a notification requirement that will last for five years.

He was also handed a two-year community order, which includes a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

The court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of all devices seized during the investigation, aiming to prevent further access to such harmful material.

It is noteworthy that Lean has a criminal history, with four previous convictions, although he has not appeared in court since 1993.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and the importance of judicial measures to prevent future offenses.
