ROBERT JONES AND SHOCKING ONLINE CRIMES IN CARDIFF AND MERTHYR TYDFIL

A man described as a 'family man' from Cardiff has been sentenced after engaging in disturbing online behavior involving a police decoy posing as a 12-year-old boy.

Robert Jones, aged 43, had sent explicit images of himself and engaged in sexually charged conversations with what he believed was a minor, but who was actually an undercover police officer, in a case that has garnered significant attention.

The incidents took place between August 21 and September 8 of the previous year, during which Jones communicated via messaging platforms Kik and Snapchat.

Prosecutor Ieuan Bennett presented details to Cardiff Crown Court, stating, "The defendant had received an image of the supposed boy lying on a bed wearing a Superman outfit.

He engaged what he thought to be a child in a text conversation." According to Mr.

Bennett, the conversation revealed that the 'child' had told Jones he was 12 years old, lived at home with his mother, and believed he was gay.

Jones, who indicated he was 42 and resided in Cardiff, continued to engage with the decoy, describing the minor as 'hot' and 'sexy.' The prosecutor outlined how the defendant then escalated the conversation into more explicit territory, asking if the 'boy' was into men.

Jones's inappropriate dialogue included descriptions of wanting to touch the child's body, kiss his stomach and chest, and even inviting him to masturbate.

These exchanges were accompanied by Jones sending various images and videos of himself lying on a bed, dressed only in underpants, with a clear erection visible.

He also requested that the 'boy' send him sexualized images of himself.

The police responded swiftly after these disturbing messages, visiting Jones's residence in Ashcroft Crescent, Fairwater.

During the investigation, they confiscated his iPhone but found no evidence of any other indecent contact beyond these messages and images.

Jones admitted to the officers that he found his own behavior 'disgusting' but maintained that he had no sexual motive behind his actions.

He further explained that he felt sympathy for the 'boy,' claiming he was closeted and believed his actions stemmed from concern instead of predatory intent.

At the time of the incident, Jones resided in Cardiff, but he has since moved to Penderyn Close in Merthyr Tydfil.

He pleaded guilty to charges of attempting sexual communication with a minor under the age of 16 and has no prior criminal convictions.

His defense, led by Stephen Thomas, acknowledged that although the victim was fictitious, Jones was aware of the inappropriateness of his conduct and showed persistence in his messaging.

Mr.

Thomas emphasized that the incident was isolated and pointed out that Jones has suffered from anxiety and depression over the years, issues which worsened following his marriage breakup approximately eight years ago.

The defense highlighted that it took three years for Jones to re-establish contact with his children and characterized him as a hard-working individual, employed as a security officer primarily responsible for property protection.

They argued that if Jones were incarcerated, it would jeopardize his employment and severely impact his family, who rely on his income.

During the sentencing hearing, Recorder IWL Jones expressed surprise when the defense requested custody be reconsidered so that Jones could retain his iPhone, which still had a year remaining on a £100-a-month contract.

The judge firmly denied this request, stating, "This doesn't normally happen...

We can't get away from the fact the phone was used for the purposes of the crime." In delivering his verdict, Recorder Jones underscored the seriousness of Jones's actions.

He remarked, "It is quite clear, according to the evidence, that you had an erection under your clothing.

You were sexually aroused.

You should be, and I am sure are, ashamed of what you did.

If the person was indeed a 12-year-old boy, there is no question he would have been harmed." He further emphasized the tragic nature of the case, noting Jones's lack of previous convictions and expressing recognition of his remorse, but also stressing the potential harm involved.

The judge ultimately sentenced Robert Jones to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

Additionally, he was ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities, perform 150 hours of unpaid work, and pay prosecution costs of £1,200 along with a victim surcharge of £156.

Jones was also placed under a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

As the court concluded, Recorder Jones addressed Jones directly, saying, "You must remember this is really a last chance," emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation and the gravity of his offense.
