ROBERT HUGHES AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN GWYNEDD
A man from Gwynedd, Robert Hughes, has been sentenced to three years in prison after a prolonged history of abusing young boys over a span of 33 years.Hughes, aged 53 and residing in Blaenau Ffestiniog, appeared before Caernarfon Crown Court to face sentencing following his guilty pleas on multiple charges.
His guilty plea included two counts of committing acts of gross indecency and two counts of inciting such acts.
Hughes also made a formal request for the court to take into account an additional 15 similar offences involving boys and young men, suggesting a broad and disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
The case against Hughes came into sharper focus after a particular incident involving a teenage boy who had visited his home.
Prosecutor Tom Morgan Jones detailed how the horrifying details of Hughes' misconduct surfaced when the young victim felt scared and harassed.
According to the prosecutor, the teenager was confronted with a bottle of beer and a pornographic video being played, which Hughes had forced him to observe.
Hughes reportedly threatened the young boy by saying he would tell his mother that he had been drinking alcohol and watching “blue” movies if the teenager disclosed what had transpired.
The court heard that the teenager, feeling terrified, confided in his best friend, which ultimately led to the matter being reported to authorities.
Following this initial report, the allegations against Hughes grew, revealing that multiple other victims had been subjected to similar abuse.
Mr Morgan Jones explained how the initial victim’s courage in coming forward helped uncover a broader pattern, with more victims realizing they were not alone.
It became evident that Hughes had targeted multiple boys and young men over many years, with some victims suffering in silence until others spoke out.
During the proceedings, Hughes' defence lawyer, Duncan Bould, highlighted that his client had himself been a victim of sexual abuse in the past, suggesting that this history might have contributed to his actions.
However, the judge, Huw Daniel, did not accept any mitigation for Hughes’ behaviour and characterized his crimes as “abhorrent.” Judge Daniel emphasized the sinister nature of Hughes' conduct, describing it as a calculated process of grooming designed to push boundaries and see how far he could go with acts he knew were wrong.
Despite acknowledging that Hughes had been subjected to sexual abuse as a young man, the judge stressed that this should have served as a motivation for him to prevent inflicting similar hurt on others, not an excuse.
As part of his sentence, Hughes is required to register as a sex offender for life.
Additionally, he is legally prohibited from entering any residence where children are present or from engaging in work that involves children.
The judge reiterated that these measures aim to prevent Hughes from having any contact with minors and to eliminate any temptation to reoffend.
Outside of Caernarfon Crown Court, a mother whose child was among Hughes’ initial victims expressed her support for her son’s bravery in speaking out.
She criticized the prison sentence handed to Hughes as being insufficient considering the extent of the suffering caused, stating, “He deserves more after what he's put everyone through.”
