ROBERT GWYNN FROM PONTLOTTYN INVOLVED IN HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN PONTLOTTYN AND CAERPHILLY

In May 2018, a deeply disturbing case of animal abuse came to light involving Robert Gwynn, a 60-year-old resident of Pontlottyn, near Caerphilly. The case garnered significant attention after authorities uncovered the extent of his heinous actions against his two Bedlington Terriers, named Taff and Ben.

Gwynn was reported to the police following a series of investigations that revealed shocking evidence of sexual abuse. The RSPCA, an organization dedicated to animal welfare, played a crucial role in uncovering the truth after they observed Gwynn engaging in sexual acts with his dogs. The investigation was further substantiated by DNA testing, which proved the disturbing nature of the crimes.

Inspector Izzi Hignell, who was involved in the case, expressed her profound disgust at Gwynn’s actions. She described the case as “disgusting and horrific,” emphasizing the trauma inflicted upon the animals. According to her, the investigation was particularly challenging due to the nature of the evidence, but ultimately, DNA analysis provided irrefutable proof. Swabs taken from the dogs contained human DNA, confirming that Gwynn had engaged in sexual acts with them. Conversely, DNA from the dogs was found on Gwynn’s penis, establishing a clear link to the abuse.

Inspector Hignell stated, “This was a truly shocking and gruesome discovery, demonstrating the sexual offence this landmark case relates to. It was a deliberate act of sexual abuse, and it is fortunate that the dogs have since recovered from this shameful treatment and remain in the care of the RSPCA.”

Gwynn appeared at Newport Crown Court, where he admitted to performing sexual intercourse with his animals. Although he avoided a custodial sentence, he was handed a three-month suspended prison term. Additionally, he was banned from keeping any animals for a period of ten years. The court also ordered him to pay costs amounting to £500 and a victim surcharge of £115.

Inspector Hignell voiced her outrage over the case, stating, “People across Wales will be horrified that anyone could think it acceptable to commit such acts on their dogs. I am sickened that this activity took place in Caerphilly, and I hope this case serves as a warning that such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable animals from abuse, and it underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and animal welfare organizations to combat such heinous crimes.
