ROBERT GUY FROM NEWTOWNABBEY SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

In a recent case that has shocked the local community of Newtownabbey, Robert Guy, a resident of 17 Ballyfore Gardens, faced serious allegations of animal cruelty involving two dogs under his care.

The charges stem from a series of neglectful acts that prompted an investigation by authorities under the Welfare of Animals Act (NI) 2011.

In August 2023, a dedicated Animal Welfare Officer from the local authority conducted a thorough inspection of Guy’s property after receiving reports that raised concerns about the condition of his dogs.

Witnesses or informants had indicated that the animals appeared to be in poor health and that there had been signs of aggression or attack between the dogs themselves.

During the inspection, officers found two dogs suffering from severe neglect.

Both animals exhibited fur loss, with one showing significant skin lesions and puncture wounds, indicating recent injuries or ongoing suffering.

The dogs’ ears were notably in poor condition, with one having very short, cropped ears, which could suggest prior mutilation or injury.

The ears and skin of both animals were filthy, further evidence of neglect and poor living conditions.

Veterinary assessments confirmed the severity of the animals’ suffering.

One dog was found to have putrid wounds, which posed a risk of infection and required immediate medical intervention.

Both dogs received treatment for their injuries and were subsequently removed from Guy’s care.

Thanks to the efforts of the authorities and veterinary professionals, the animals were rehabilitated and successfully rehomed to loving new families.

Further investigations revealed that Robert Guy had previously been disqualified from owning dogs.

In November 2021, a court had imposed a disqualification order preventing him from keeping any animals for a period of seven years.

Despite this, he was found to have breached this order, which constitutes a serious violation of animal welfare laws.

In court, Robert Guy was sentenced to four months in custody, though this sentence was suspended for 12 months.

Additionally, he was handed a 15-year ban from owning or keeping dogs, a measure designed to prevent any future incidents of neglect or abuse.

The case has been widely reported by the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, highlighting the importance of animal welfare enforcement and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable animals in the region.
