JOSHUA MCCLURG FROM NEWTOWNABBEY SHOCKS COUNTY ANTRIM WITH CRUELTY TOWARD KITTEN
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Newtownabbey in County Antrim, 21-year-old Joshua McClurg was found guilty of inflicting severe harm on a defenseless kitten.The incident, which took place recently, came to light after animal welfare officers from Belfast City Council responded to a distress call on December 3, 2024.
According to reports, the injured kitten was brought into a veterinary clinic suffering from a fractured spine.
Veterinarians quickly diagnosed her with paraplegia, indicating a serious spinal injury, and noted that she was in a state of shock and extreme distress.
The severity of her injuries prompted the veterinary staff to make the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her, sparing her further suffering.
The investigation revealed that the injuries were inflicted by McClurg, who was caught on doorbell camera footage during the attack.
Witnesses and authorities confirmed that McClurg had deliberately thrown the small animal against a wall, causing the catastrophic injuries.
During police interviews, McClurg admitted to the act, stating that he had thrown the kitten in anger.
He was aware that the cat was injured and believed he had broken its legs.
Further footage showed McClurg picking up the cat aggressively by the scruff and then dropping her from a small height onto the floor, despite knowing she was injured.
This act of dropping the animal could have caused additional pain and suffering, as noted by the veterinarian.
The court was also informed that one of the incidents was witnessed by a four-year-old girl present at the property, adding a disturbing element to the case.
McClurg ultimately pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the kitten.
During the court proceedings, his lawyer provided mitigation, explaining that McClurg was under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident but has since ceased use and is seeking help from his general practitioner to address underlying emotional issues.
The lawyer also highlighted that McClurg and the owner of the kitten are still in a relationship and requested leniency, noting that McClurg is on benefits and had entered a guilty plea.
In sentencing, the court imposed a 10-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years.
Additionally, McClurg was banned from owning or keeping any animals for a period of 20 years, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the community’s concern for animal welfare.
