PERTH MAN JAILED FOR TEXT MESSAGE RAPE THREAT
A 35-year-old man named Robert Garrick from Perth has been sentenced to seven months in jail for threatening to kidnap, rape, and kill a nurse.Garrick sent over 70 threatening messages to a woman, a nurse he was assigned to work with at a medical day centre.
During the Perth Sheriff Court hearing, it was revealed that Garrick believed he was having a genuine conversation with the nurse because he was under the influence of a cocktail of drugs, which included legal highs, gas, and cannabis.
The sheriff noted Garrick's long history of convictions, including six previous assault convictions and seven breaches of the peace, and highlighted the role of illicit substance abuse in his offending.
Garrick had started using substances such as gas and cannabis from the age of 11 and had been taking legal highs, also known as new psychoactive substances.
The court heard that Garrick was given the nurse’s mobile number when she was assigned to him and used it to send numerous texts and voicemails over a 24-hour period, including the threats.
Additionally, Garrick admitted to possessing an offensive weapon.
The sheriff commented on the importance of addressing substance abuse issues, implying that a custodial sentence might help Garrick realize the consequences of his actions.
