ROBERT FERGUSON FROM COLERAINE CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS DURING POLICE DUTY IN NORTHERN IRELAND
In a recent court case that has garnered significant attention, Robert Ferguson, a police officer based in Coleraine, was found guilty of committing two separate acts of sexual assault while on duty. The incidents took place on May 18, 2023, during Ferguson’s work shift, and the court proceedings revealed disturbing details about his conduct towards a female colleague.According to the testimony presented in court, Ferguson, who is 34 years old, engaged in inappropriate behavior while both were inside a police vehicle. The female officer, who was in the passenger seat, recounted feeling increasingly uncomfortable as Ferguson made comments about her appearance. She described how Ferguson reached over with his left hand and placed it on her leg near her knee, then moved higher up her inner thigh, with his thumb resting on her outer leg. The victim stated that she instinctively pushed his hand away and remarked that Ferguson was “touchy-feely,” feeling embarrassed and awkward in the process.
Further allegations detailed that Ferguson’s inappropriate conduct continued when he touched her breast. The victim testified that Ferguson commented, “I nearly touched a boob there,” to which she responded, “You did.” These actions, which the court deemed to be serious breaches of professional conduct, occurred while Ferguson was in a position of authority and during official working hours. The court emphasized that such behavior was a grave violation of the standards expected of a police officer.
Throughout the proceedings, Ferguson maintained his innocence, denying any improper contact. He claimed that he was driving a response vehicle and had both hands firmly on the steering wheel at all times, asserting that he could not have committed the acts as described. Despite his denial, the judge made it clear that Ferguson’s actions had discredited his police uniform and reputation.
In sentencing, Ferguson was given 18 months probation, ordered to pay £1,500 in compensation to the victim, and placed under a three-year restraining order to prevent any contact with her. Additionally, he was granted bail while he plans to appeal the conviction, with a bail amount set at £750. The case has sparked discussions about conduct within law enforcement and the importance of accountability, especially when officers abuse their authority in such a manner.
