ROBERT FERGUSON OF CARLISLE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN WARWICK ROAD
In a case that has shocked the local community of Carlisle, Robert Ferguson, a 60-year-old resident of Warwick Road, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a young girl. The allegations against Ferguson came to light when concerns were raised regarding a drawing made by his young victim, which prompted further investigation by authorities.
Ferguson faced charges of causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.
He vehemently denied these accusations, asserting his innocence throughout the trial held at Carlisle Crown Court.
However, after a thorough examination of the evidence and testimony presented, the jury reached a verdict of guilty by majority.
The court established that the offending occurred on or before June 19, 2015, at an address in Carlisle.
The court proceedings revealed that during police interviews, the young girl disclosed that Ferguson had asked her to keep his inappropriate conduct a secret.
This element of coercion and manipulation was a significant part of the case, highlighting the severity of the abuse and the breach of trust involved.
Judge Peter Hughes, presiding over the case, sentenced Ferguson to four years in prison.
In his remarks, the judge emphasized the gravity of Ferguson’s actions, stating, “This was a course of conduct where you took advantage of her young age.” The judge also ordered Ferguson to sign the sex offenders’ register and to comply with a sexual harm prevention order, which will remain in effect indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to prevent further offenses.
Prior to the sentencing, Ferguson was remanded in custody following the court’s decision to adjourn the hearing to June 20.
Judge Hughes made it clear that the sentence would be custodial, reflecting the serious nature of the crime and the need for justice to be served for the young victim and the community of Carlisle.
