ROBERT DANNATT FROM WHITBY ESCAPES PRISON AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT ON VULNERABLE WOMAN IN YORKSHIRE

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Robert Dannatt, a 61-year-old resident of Spital Bridge in Whitby, was involved in a serious incident of sexual assault involving a vulnerable young woman. The incident occurred in July 2018 and has since been the subject of court proceedings that highlight both the severity of the offense and the complexities of the legal process.

Dannatt appeared before Scarborough Magistrates Court in June to face charges related to the sexual assault. During the hearing, he admitted to the allegations, which involved inappropriate and sexually motivated contact with a 23-year-old woman who suffers from special needs, making her particularly vulnerable. The court was informed that the assault took place while the victim was traveling home on a bus, a situation that underscores the disturbing nature of the offense.

According to court reports, Dannatt touched the woman in a sexual manner without her consent and proceeded to make crude, sexually explicit comments, indicating a desire to engage in sexual activity with her. The victim was left frightened, confused, and distressed by the encounter, as she did not understand why she was targeted by the man. Her experience highlights the trauma faced by victims of such predatory behavior, especially when they are unable to defend themselves or fully comprehend the situation.

Following his admission, a sentencing date was scheduled at York Crown Court. However, Dannatt failed to appear for the hearing, prompting authorities to issue an arrest warrant. The police later located him in a local pub in Whitby, where he was promptly detained. He was brought before the court on the same day for a hearing related to his failure to appear and the original charges.

In the sentencing, the court decided against imposing a prison term on Dannatt. Instead, he received a combination of measures aimed at rehabilitation and public safety. His sentence included a 24-month suspended sentence, meaning he will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offense within that period. Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for ten years, restricting his behavior and contact with vulnerable individuals.

Furthermore, Dannatt was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. He was also mandated to attend 33 sessions of sex offenders treatment, designed to address underlying issues and prevent future offenses. As part of his rehabilitation, he was required to participate in a 15-day activity program aimed at promoting behavioral change and accountability.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts of the justice system to address sexual offenses, especially those involving vulnerable victims. While the court opted for a sentence that emphasizes rehabilitation over incarceration, the measures imposed reflect the seriousness with which such crimes are viewed in the community of Whitby and beyond.
