In a series of terrifying nighttime intrusions across the Manchester area, Robert Curtin, a 29-year-old man from Eccles, was convicted of multiple heinous crimes including rape, indecent assault, and robbery. The front door had been left unlocked, as her boyfriend had recently left for work. Curtin covered her face with a blanket and threatened to kill one of her young children if she made any noise. He then proceeded to commit a series of serious sexual offenses, including rape. Afterward, he went upstairs and assaulted her 17-year-old brother with a rolling pin, who was too frightened to intervene. Curtin also indecently assaulted the woman and later attempted to destroy forensic evidence to hinder the investigation. Before fleeing the scene, he stole cash and property from the family.

Thanks to detailed descriptions provided by the victims, police quickly identified Curtin as the prime suspect. He was subsequently recognized in an identification parade, and forensic evidence linked him conclusively to both incidents. His criminal record, which included numerous previous convictions, further supported the case against him.

At Manchester Crown Court, Curtin faced multiple charges. He was sentenced to two three-year terms for indecent assault on the mother and daughter, with these sentences running concurrently. For the robbery, he received a six-year sentence, also concurrent. His most severe punishment was a seven-year sentence for the rape of the 25-year-old woman, along with four years for indecent assault and six years for robbery, all to be served concurrently. Additionally, he was sentenced to two years for assaulting her brother. The overall sentences were structured to run concurrently, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
