She died in hospital two days later.Demi Leigh was left with McCluney by her mother, Ann Marie McDonald, while she went to cash her child benefit.
The toddler was in McCluney's care for just 90 minutes.McCluney admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, but the jury rejected this claim.
The jury heard that the boy never explained his reason for the attack but had alluded to being angry with her behavior.Following his conviction in 2009, Judge Mr Justice Sweeney said: "You were extremely fed-up with having to babysit because it was your birthday, nobody had planned anything for you and you did not think that was fair."He also told the court that he lost his temper because Demi Leigh was crying and he became more and more angry until he overwhelmed her with violence over a period of about 10 minutes.
The judge stated, "You got angrier and angrier until you lost your temper altogether.
You then, over a period, according to you, of about 10 minutes, hit her many times.
You were large and powerful, she was only a small child and stood no chance against your onslaught." McCluney was described as someone who was large and powerful, with the judge warning that he would not be released until it is decided he no longer poses a danger, and that currently, it was impossible to tell when that might be.McCluney later told a health worker, "I'm not proud of what I've done and everyone will think I'm a monster but nobody can ever punish me as much as I'll punish myself."He also admitted to having carried out the vicious attack on his 15th birthday, which resulted in Demi Leigh's tragic death two days later in hospital.
Outside court, her father, Gary Mahon, described him as "evil" and stated, "The person who did this to her is evil."Gary Mahon, who split from Demi Leigh's mother three months after she was born, said: "I don't believe he has mental problems.
He is dangerous and should get a life sentence." He also added, "She was always smiling and had a cheeky face.
She was so loveable and every time I saw her, she would run to me shouting 'Daddy'".
Mr Mahon said he contacted social services twice because of concerns for his daughter's welfare, indicating there were issues before the incident. The article also includes images and sketches depicting the injuries inflicted and the victim's distress, as well as statements from her father about her personality and their relationship.
